North Carolina State’s Riki Bonnema Soars in 50 Free at ACCs

ATLANTA—Day two of the ACC Championships saw more impressive swims, with N.C. State’s Riki Bonnema securing a close finish against Kelsi Worrell of Louisville.

The Virginia women moved up to claim first place in the meet with a score of 486. North Carolina maintained their second place position with 458, while North Carolina State grabbed third with 383.

The evening opened with Virginia’s Leah Smith grabbing first in the 500 freestyle in 4:35.67, missing the ACC meet and conference records, which she holds, by a little over a second. Danielle Siverling of North Carolina was second with a time of 4:40.28, and Cece Williams from Virginia rounded out the top three at 4:43.09.

Louisville’s Tanja Kylliainen touched first in the 200 IM in 1:55.72. Virginia’s Kaitlyn Jones (1:56.38) and Courtney Bartholomew (1:56.53) took second and third respectively. All three earned themselves invitations to the NCAAs

The excitement continued as North Carolina State junior Riki Bonnema claimed first in the 50 freestyle with 21.97. Bonnema was not only the only woman under 22 seconds, but also broke the ACC meet and conference record in prelims with a time of 21.87, earning herself an NCAA ‘A’ cut. Kelsi Worrell of Louisville was second with 22.12, and Florida State’s Kaitlyn Dressel was third with 22.39.

Women’s 1-meter diving was full of action tonight with the top three scorers within four points of each other. Florida State senior Katrina Young claimed first with 337.60, while Miami’s Thea Vock snagged second with a score of 333.85. Virginia Tech’s Kalyea Arnett was third with 333.45.

The night ended with the women’s 200 freestyle relay. The North Carolina State relay team of Lauren Poli (22.46), Krista Duffield (22.02), Ashlyn Koletic (22.23) and Riki Bonnema (21.47) claimed first and lowered their own ACC meet record to 1:28.18 missing the conference record by only .02.

North Carolina’s Caroline Baldwin (22.77), Hannah Lincoln (22.04), Sarah Hitchens (22.34) and Allyn Hardesty (22.25) were second with a time of 1:29.40 earning them an NCAA ‘A’ cut along with North Carolina State. Virginia’s Caitlin Cooper (22.66), Ellen Thomas (21.87), Shannon Rauth (22.47) and Ellen Williamson (22.52) earned them third with a time of 1:29.52 and an NCAA ‘B’ cut.
