No. 8 SMU Women’s Swimming Team Dominates North Texas

DALLAS, Texas. January, 20. THE seniors finished their careers at home on a very good note as eight seniors swam their last meet at Perkins Natatorium and the Mustangs won every event of the night. SMU defeated North Texas 149-85.

The night got started with the team of Alex Micuil, Tamara Sambrailo, Kate Eason and Leane Darling winning the 200 yard medley relay. Flavia Rigamonti was in complete domination of her opponents in the 1000 yard freestyle event as she reached the wall almost a minute before the others.

Kathleen Roberts and Tiffany Sammis took first and second in the 200 yard freestyle, respectively while three other Mustangs took the top finishes in the 50 yard freestyle. Laura Pomeroy clocked in at 23.83, Candace Blackman timed in at 24.09 while Jennifer Blackman came in at 24.60.

In the 200 yard individual medley, Jennifer Basel finished first with 2:06.84 and Eason in second with 2:08.39, which is a new season high.

The divers were able to put more points on the board for the Mustangs as they finished first and second in both the one-meter and three-meter events. Kristin Schild scored 279.52 in the one-meter and Christina Hussong came in second with 266.92 while Stacia Cantonis came in fourth with 174.97. Schlid and Cantonis both notched new season highs. In the three-meter event, Hussong placed first with a season high score of 265.05 and Schild came in second at 251.79.

Petra Klosova placed first in the 100 yard free style while teammates J. Blackman and Sambrailo followed closely in second and third place. All three ladies set new season highs. Roxane Akradi took first in the 100 yard freestyle while Anja Carman placed first in the 100 yard backstroke. C. Blackman finished first in the 500 yard freestyle and Eason placed first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:06.97. Pomeroy, Klosova, Martina Hrdinova and Jessica Stanton finished the night by winning the 200 yard freestyle relay.

The Mustangs will swim again on Jan., Fri. 20 at 5 p.m. at Rice.

Senior Class of 2006
The senior class of 2006 has led SMU to three conference championships and to NCAA finishes of 4th, 18th and 7th.

Maruzanne Grundlingh a native of Stellenbosch, South Africa, was a NCAA All-America and finalist in the World Short Course Championships in 2004.

Martina Hrdinova from Piestnay, Slovakia, was a NCAA All-America, Slovak National Champion, represented Slovakia in World University Games in 2005 and European Championship.

Christina Hussong from Federal Way, Washington, was a finalist at the WAC Championships and NCAA Zone qualifier.

Alexsandra Miciul is a native of Zieolona Gora, Poland, was a NCAA Qualifier, Polish National Champion, represented Poland in the 200 Olympic Games and participated in European Championships and World Short Course Championships.

Sara Nordenstam from Oslo, Norway, was a NCAA Qualifier, finalist for Sweden and Norway in European and World Championships and was a Norway and Swedish National Champion.

Laura Pomeroy from Oakville, Ontario, Canada, was a NCAA All-America, U.S. and Canadian National Champion, and two time medalist at Commonwealth Games.

Flavia Rigamonti from Breganzona, Switzerland, is a five time NCAA Champion, school record holder in 500 and 1650 yard freestyle, European Champion, Olympic Finalist and five time World Champion Medalist.

Jessica Stanton a native of Miami, Florida, was a WAC Finalist and three time SMU letter winner.
