No. 24 Missouri Women Pick Up Final Home Win

COLUMBIA, Missouri, January 13. THE 24th-ranked Missouri women's swimming and diving team had a dominant day in the pool on senior day, outscoring Iowa State by a 184-103 final score this afternoon at the Mizzou Aquatic Center. The meet came after Friday evening's scheduled men's and women's home dual against Missouri State was postponed due to the winter storm that hit Columbia yesterday.

"I thought we were solid today and probably where we need to be after our intense training cycle," said Head Coach Brian Hoffer. "We were expecting to swim last night but had to send everyone home. We were all pumped up but I thought this afternoon we looked like we hadn't raced for a while. I think we were a little rusty but hopefully we'll get our chance to race against Missouri State Monday," he said.

Jill Bastien was dominant among the field this afternoon, winning both of her individual races in impressive fashion. She swam a time of 1:04.49 to edge out teammate Kayla Bowcutt in the 100 yard breaststroke and earned another first place finish in the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:19.28.

"Jill was definitely the best today," said Hoffer. "Her times were just off her best times. She was by far the best today."

Senior Shannon Hogan also had a strong meet, placing first in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 57.89 and a close second in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 51.84.
"Shannon is a very emotional swimmer and it was good to see her put that aside and swim well today," said hoffer.

Fellow senior Amy Charley performed well on her senior day as well. She took first place honors in both the 200 yard backstroke and 200 yard individual medley events in addition to finishing fourth 100 yard backstroke.

Distance swimmer and Columbia native Carly Sullivan notched a first place finish in the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 10:15.85.

The Tigers won both of the afternoon's medley events and took first through fourth places in the 100 yard backstroke and 100 and 200 yard butterfly races.

Diving was also on tap for the afternoon. Kendra Melnychuk came in first in the 3 meter diving competition with a score of 297.23 and finished second in the 1 meter with a score of 264.08. Senior diver Kim Massaro remained consistent with two third place finishes in the afternoon's diving events.

Weather permitting, the Tigers will host the Bears of Missouri State Monday at 2 p.m. at the Mizzou Aquatic Center to make up for Friday's meet that was postponed. Stay tuned to www.mutigers.com for confirmation of the meet.
