No. 2 Cardinal Men Open Season with 157-97 Defeat of Cal State Bakersfield

STANFORD, CA, November 9. NO. 2 Stanford men's swimming team opened the 2004-05 season with a convincing 157-97 victory over Cal State Bakersfield in a dual meet Friday afternoon at the Avery Aquatic Center, as reported by the Farm.

The Cardinal opened the meet with a win in the 400 yard medley relay as Hongzhe Sun, Gary Marshall, Matt McDonald and Jayme Cramer turned in the top time of 3:20.14. Stanford followed with a 1-2-3 finish in the 1000 freestyle. Freshman Noa Sakamoto clocked in at 9:22.97 to lead the field, followed by teammates Shaun Phillips (9:33.12) and Michael McLean (9:37.64). Sophomore Andy Grant and junior Tobias Oriwol finished 1-2 in the 200 yard freestyle with times of 1:39.48 and 1:39.61 respectively.

The fourth event of the afternoon was the 100 yard backstroke where sophomore Kyle Ransom took top honors, touching the wall in 52.83. Teammate Matt McDonald placed third in a time of 53.50. Stanford posted another 1-2-3 finish in the 100 yard breaststroke as Ricky Eddy (57.87) edged fellow Cardinals Karl Boehringer (57.91) and Nick Wolfe (58.74). Sophomore Hongzhe Sun won the 200 yard butterfly in a time of 1:48.18, followed by senior Jayme Cramer (1:51.53) and freshman Noa Sakamoto (1:56.41).

Sophomore sprinter Ben Wildman-Tobriner won the 50 yard freestyle in a time of 20.64 and followed that up with a win in the 100 yard freestyle (45.51). Event nine featured the 200 yard backstroke as sophomore Andy Grant touched the wall first in a time of 1:54.16. Cardinal Kyle Ransom was third (1:55.51). Stanford once again went 1-2-3 in the 200 yard breaststroke, led by junior Nick Wolfe (2:05.41). Junior Mark Stephens was second (2:08.57) followed by senior Thomas Brown (2:09.40).

Stanford swept the 500 yard freestyle as well with Tobias Oriwol (4:36.88), Noa Sakamoto (4:39.52) and Daniel Beal (4:39.69) placing 1-2-3 respectively. Hongzhe Sun turned in the top time in the 100 yard butterfly, clocking in at 49.99. In the 200 yard IM, Mark Stephens posted the fastest time in the field with a 1:55.46, followed by teammate Kyle Ransom's 1:56.72.

In the final event of the meet, the 400 yard free relay, the Cardinal team of Andy Grant, Gary Marshall, Jayme Cramer and Ben Wildman-Tobriner topped the field in a time of 3:06.49.

Stanford is back in action next week on Wednesday, November 10 in a triple-distance meet against California
