No. 13 Indiana Women Defeat No. 10 Michigan and No. 19 Notre Dame

ANN ARBOR, Michigan, January 14. THE 13th-ranked Hoosiers finished the two-day, three-session meet with 1,460.5 points, while No. 19 Notre Dame was second with 1,074 points. No. 10 Michigan posted 1,052.5 points to finish third, while Illinois rounded out the field with 417 points.

Indiana posted 17 NCAA provisional qualifying marks on the day. Sophomore Sarah Stockwell picked up "B" cuts in the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes, while Allison Kay earned cuts in the 400-yard individual medley and 200-yard butterfly and Presley Bard earned cuts in the 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard backstroke. Brittany Barwegen (200 fly), Emma Berry (1,650-yard freestyle), Ashley Jones (400 IM), Cassie Luhrsen (1,650 free), Amilee Smith (200 breast) and Leila Vaziri (100 and 200 back) also came in under "B" standards. Vaziri, Stockwell, freshman Donna Smailis and senior Annica Lofstedt also earned a provisional qualifying mark with their win in the 200-yard medley relay (1:42.06), while Vaziri, Lofstedt, senior Clarissa Wentworth and Bard turned the trick in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Stockwell turned in a time of 1:02.85 to win the 100 breast, while sophomore Abby Cooper was in second with a time of 1:05.03. Stockwell capped the breaststroke sweep with a win in the 200 with a time of 2:16.21 to edge Notre Dame's Julia Quinn, who touched in 2:16.87. Smith finished third in 2:17.04.

Kay won the 400 IM in 4:22.24, while Jones was second in 4:22.42. The "B" cut was the first in the career of Jones, a freshman.

Vaziri picked up a win for IU in the 100-yard backstroke, posting a time of 54.95, while Bard was right behind her in second with a time of 55.89. Vaziri has already posted an automatic qualifying time in the event on the season, while Bard lowered her previous best cut by 0.01 seconds. Sophomore Kristin Cihoski completed a 1-2-3 Hoosier sweep in the event with a time of 57.59.

Bard earned a win of her own in the 200-yard backstroke, touching in 1:58.98. Vaziri was tied for second in 2:00.66, while Jones was fourth in 2:01.50.

Luhrsen lowered her existing "B" cut with a time of 16:31.41 in the 1,650 free to finish second. Barwegen matched her effort in the 200-yard butterfly, turning in a second-place time of 2:00.55 to take more than a second off her career-best effort. Berry picked up her first career cut with a fifth-place time of 16:51.08 in the 1,650 free.

Indiana's best finish in the 100-yard freestyle came courtesy of Lofstedt, who turned in a time of 51.16 to take fourth place.

Smailis was the top Indiana finisher in the 100-yard butterfly, as she was second in a career-best 56.29. Lofstedt (56.29) and Barwegen (56.30) were third and fourth, respectively. Freshman Emily Lanteigne paced the Hoosiers in the 200-yard freestyle with a third-place effort of 1:52.35.

The Hoosiers closed the first session of the day with 1-2 finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay. Vaziri, senior Clarissa Wentworth, Berry and Lanteigne posted a time of 7:28.74 to take first, while Bard, Lofstedt, Luhrsen and Cihoski were second in 7:35.83.

Indiana closed the meet with a second-place finish in the 400 free relay in 3:24.01.

"We had three great sessions, finishing with the third tonight," head coach Ray Looze said. "It was nice to come away with a win against some real good competition. We positioned ourselves at this point with some good momentum. We had a lot of season-best times. I'm just really pleased with the way the team swam comprehensively, and the divers also did a great job on the one-meter and three-meter. It was just a real good overall effort."

In the dive well, freshman Brittney Feldman was the Hoosiers' top finisher in the one-meter, as she posted a career-best score of 295.85 for first place. Senior Lindsay Weigle was right behind her in third place, turning in a score of 279.55.

In the platform, which was contested as an exhibition event, Weigle led the way with a first-place score of 298.20, while classmate Heather Chapman was second with 294.55 points. Junior Jade Summerlin cleared the NCAA Zone qualifying standard with a score of 246.20 for fifth place.

"The women did well," assistant diving coach Todd Waikel said. "Jade Summerlin made her Zone on tower and we went 1-2. They did a great job. It was a good day. On one-meter we went two and three and Brittney Feldman had a really great one-meter meet. She did a great job. I was very pleased."

Indiana is next in action on Saturday, Jan. 20, when it will host Missouri in its final dual meet of the 2006-07 season. The meet, which starts at 10 a.m. at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center, will serve as Senior Day for Chapman, Susanna Ernst, Lofstedt, Vaziri, Weigle and Wentworth.
