No. 13 Aggies Top Southern Illinois

ORLANDO, Fla. January, 8. THE 13th-ranked Texas A&M women’s swimming team earned an abbreviated 49-32 dual meet win over Southern Illinois at the YMCA Aquatic Center on Saturday evening.

The Aggie women (7-1) won all nine events contested at non-traditional distances against the Salukis. Of the seven individual events won by A&M, freshmen captured five of them.

Freshman Triin Aljand (Tallinn, Estonia) led the way for the Aggies on Saturday by swimming on both first place relays in addition to winning the 25-yard freestyle (10.85).

Aljand teamed with Kristen Heiss (Casper, Wyo.), Erin Briskie (Dallas), and Megan Rains (Puyallup, Wash.) to win the first event of the meet, the 100-yard medley relay (50.06), while joining with Codie Hansen (Arlington, Texas), Christine Marshall (Newport News, Va.) and Ewelina Zwierzykowski (Corpus Christi, Texas) to snag top honors in the meet’s final event, the 300-yard freestyle relay (2:37.81).

Hansen, Heiss, Marshall, and Rains each grabbed individual victories to go with finishing first on one of the two winning relays. Freshmen Marshall and Hansen took first place in the 75 and 400-yard freestyles, respectively, in 38.73 and 4:00.08 while Heiss, another freshman, hit the wall first in the 75-yard backstroke (42.67). Rains, a sophomore, won the 75-yard fly in 42.06.

The Aggies’ fifth freshman winner was Julia Wilkinson (Stratford, Ontario) who was tops in the 100-yard individual medley (1:00.19).

Senior Britney Pesek (Missouri City, Texas) turned in the final individual victory for the Aggies, winning the 75-yard breaststroke in 49.06.

The Aggies will continue to train in Orlando until returning to College Station on Jan. 10. Their next meet will be Jan. 14 against No. 8 SMU at the Student Rec Center Natatorium.
