No. 11 Michigan Drops Hammer on Eastern Michigan, 165-107

YPSILANTI, Michigan, October 20. THE No. 11 University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team earned its first victory of the 2006-07 season with a resounding 165-107 win over Eastern Michigan (Oct. 20) at Michael H. Jones Natatorium. The Wolverines earned the top time or score in all 15 events, including the top two spots in the 100-yard backstroke, 100 and 200-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley, and one-meter dive. Michigan now holds a 27-0 all-time record against the Eagles.

Sophomore Kyle Schroeder led the way for the divers, scoring the highest points in both the one and three-meter events with scores of 308.63 and 293.03, respectively. The 308.63 score is a NCAA zone diving qualifying mark.

Michigan opened the meet with a 1-2-3-4 finish in the 100-yard backstroke. Sophomore Matt Patton the sweep of the top four spots, touching the wall in 50.10 and breaking his previous personal record of 51.46. Patton would also go on to claim first in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:48.69.

Co-captain, junior Alex Vanderkaay, earned two victories on the night as well, touching the wall in 9:20.07 in the 1,000-yard freestyle and 4:35.22 in the 500-yard freestyle.

Freshman Scott Spann continued to impress, as he took his second collegiate victory. Spann recorded the fastest time in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing in 56.53. He also finished with the fastest time while swimming an exhibition in the 200-yard breaststroke, touching the wall in 2:01.77 — a time less than a second off of the 2:00.80 NCAA consideration time.

Two other freshmen where able to capture victories for the Wolverines. Chris Brady took the top spot in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 49.92, while Charlie Houchin won the 200-yard freestyle (1:41.27).

Sophomore Bobby Savulich edged out Eastern's Derick Roe for the top spot in the 50-yard freestyle by 0.1 seconds. Savulich also topped Roe in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 46.73.

Junior Dane Grenda took the top spot in the 200-yard individual medley (1:51.55) and sophomore Curtis Dauw won the 200-yard butterfly (1:50.76).

The Maize and Blue also posted the fastest time in the final event of the night, the 200-yard freestyle relay — a race not scored due to being an exhibition. The team of Chris Brady, sophomore Evan Ryser, freshman André Schultz and Bobby Savulich posted an impressive 1:24.57.
