Nittany Lion Women Seek to Pass Wolverines in Big Ten

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA, February 16. THE 14th-ranked Penn State women's swimming and diving team is in Bloomington, Ind. hoping to improve on last year's second place Big Ten Championship finish behind Michigan.

The meet begins 7 p.m. Wednesday at Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center and runs through Saturday evening.

Additionally, CSTV: College Sports Television, the first 24-hour college sports network, will air the Big Ten Women's Swimming and Diving Championships on a tape-delay basis on Tuesday, Feb. 22 at 9:30 p.m. EST. Jason Knapp and Mike O'Brien will call the action.

Overall, seven Top 25 programs will compete at the championships. Along with No. 14 Penn State, No. 8 Wisconsin, No. 17 Michigan, No. 18 Indiana, No. 23 Minnesota, No. 24 Northwestern and No. 24 Purdue (tie) are also ranked.

The Wolverines won the title last season by 14 points over the Nittany Lions.

Several conference championship records are expected to be broken this weekend. In all, Penn State swimmers hold five Big Ten Championship records.

Sarah Haupt (Carlisle, Pa.), Courtney Stanchock (Bloomsburg, Pa.), Amberle Biedermann (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Deirdre Dlugonski (Washington, Pa.) hold both the 200 and 400 medley relay records with times of 1:39.22 and 3:36.39, respectively.

Biedermann also holds records in the 100 butterfly (53.54) and 200 butterfly (1:57.87). Haupt owns the 100 backstroke (53.44) and Kristen Woodring (Sinking Spring, Pa.) holds the 100 breaststroke (59.77) record.

Biedermann has won seven Big Ten titles, while Dlugonski has won six, Haupt has won six, Stanchock has won three, and Woodring has won seven.

11 a.m. – 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, platform diving – trials, 1,650 freestyle
7 p.m. – 1,650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, platform diving – finals, 400 freestyle relay
