HUANGSHAN, China, October 18.  You know your event lost some serious star power when the biggest news of the day is who wasn’t swimming at the Chinese Nationals.  Asian record setter Ning Zetao had to pull himself out of the 50 free “due to a sudden sickness” reported Xinhua. This, just a day after Ning powered his way to a 100 free Asian record.

Xinhua reports that Ning “had diarrhea and ran a low grade fever on Friday night.”

“I swam very slowly today because I participated too many competition this year and feel very tired,” Yu told Xinhua.

Zhu Menghui clipped Lu Ying at the wall in the women’s 50-meter free, 25.31 to 25.39, while Liu Xiang and Li Shuyi tied for third with matching times of 25.45.

With world-leader Ye Shiwen concentrating on off events this week, Wang Xinya wound up winning the women’s 400-meter IM in 4:44.47.  Ye holds the top time this year with a 4:30.84 from the previous Chinese Nationals earlier in the year in Qingdao.  Wu Tianqi (4:46.36) and Liu Yaxin (4:46.36) placed second and third.

Huang Chaosheng raced his way to a win in the men’s 200-meter breaststroke with a 2:11.68, while Wang Boyu placed second in 2:12.94.  Li Xiang hit the wall third in 2:13.03.

Bi Yirong, who stands 14th in the world with a season-best 8:26.49 from Chinese Nationals in Qingdao, eased her way to a win in the women’s 800-meter free with an 8:35.00.  Chen Shiyun took second in 8:40.24 with Xu Danlu earning third in 8:45.28.
