Nike Cup Day One Complete at Kenyon

GAMBIER, Ohio, November 30. THE Kenyon College men's swim team scored 124 points and jumped out to an early lead Thursday evening in the opening session of the three-day Nike Cup Invitational. In women's competition, the Ladies scored 85 points and held down third place.

The Nike Cup's first session featured just two distance events, which were primers for the field of four women's teams and five men's teams before they dive into the meat of the Invitational schedule on Friday and Saturday.

The highlight of the night for Kenyon was sophomore Eric Dunn's (Wilmington, DE/The Tatnall School) victory in the 1,650-yard freestyle. He completed the grueling test in a time of 15:49.89. Three other Lords raced to top-five finishes in the same event, including freshman Kegan Borland (Vandergrift, PA/Saint Joseph) who took third place with a time of 15:55.44.

In the only other men's event, Kenyon's 800-yard freestyle relay team placed fourth. At the end of the night, the University of Pennsylvania team sat in second place with 98 points, Washington & Lee University was third with 50 points, Wabash College was fourth with 37 points, and Johns Hopkins University was fifth with 34 points.

The Kenyon women's team had a bit more success in the 800-yard freestyle relay. The team of Tina Ertl (Halle, Germany/Sportgymnasium Halle), Rebecca Wenzlau (Palo Alto, CA/Palo Alto Senior), Kate Coker (Rye, NH/Portsmouth), and Danielle Arad (Yorba Linda, CA/Tarbut V'Torah) claimed second place with a time of 7:33.47.

In the 1,650-yard freestyle, Kenyon's top finisher was Jaime Straub (Pelham Manor, NY/Sacred Heart) who placed fifth with a time of 17:30.78.

At the end of the women's session, Pennsylvania moved into first place with 133 points, the University of Kansas was second with 88 points, Kenyon was three points back of the Jayhawks, and Johns Hopkins University owned fourth place with 30 points.
