Nicolas Albiero Lowers Both Records, St. Xavier Secures 29th Straight Kentucky High School State Title

The St. Xavier boys collected their 29th straight Kentucky high school state title on Saturday afternoon. The team was powered by three relay wins and a number of strong individual performances.

St. Xavier started the finals session by lowering their own state record in the 200 medley relay. Martin KitzkenKeefer BarnumConner Kang, and Michael Eastman clocked a 1:32.31, just .03 faster than last year’s quartet went.

Lex. Catholic’s Matt MenkeThomas StrotherZach Hils, and Scott Scanlon claimed silver (1:33.48). Bowling Green completed the podium with the team of Neal MorsiHunter EatonGarrett Strickler, and Dylan Taylor going a 1:36.55.

Aldan Johnston then made it two for two for St. Xavier for event wins and state records. The junior posted a 1:36.89 in the 200 freestyle. The old mark was a 1:37.93 swum in 2013 by Max Williamson of Cov. Catholic. Cov. Catholic’s Nick Smith was second in 1:38.29. Johnston’s teammate Cole Brown picked up bronze in 1:40.95.

Hils then improved on his top seeded time and removed Williamson’s name from another record. Hils touched in 1:48.83 to win the 200 IM and slide under Williamson’s 1:48.88 swum in 2012. St. Xavier teammates Barnum (1:50.52) and Nitzken (1:53.37) rounded out the podium.

Trinity’s Hunter Tap led a tight trio in the 50 freestyle. The sophomore won the splash and dash in 20.60. Second went to North Oldham’s William Tarvest (20.63) and Eastman secured third (20.84).

Holy Cross’ Gus Staubitz dominated the one meter diving event with 432.90 points. Highlands’ Finn Murphy was second (289.35) and Bowling Green’s Conner Twyman (385.40) finished third.

Christian Academy’s Nicolas Albiero then finally got his chance to race. The senior lowered his own 100 butterfly state record with a 46.29 to win the event by over four seconds. Ky. Country Day’s Misha Semenov was runner up (50.73) while Brown (51.21) placed third.

Tapp swept the sprint freestyle events, taking the 100 in record fashion. Tapp was a 44.65, just faster than Thomas Cooper‘s 44.71. Cooper also swam for Trinity. Tarvest was again second, only a tenth from the record. Hils finished third (45.00). That is a sophomore trio, set up for two more years of tight racing.

Johnston made it two individual victories today, adding 500 freestyle gold to his 200 win. the St. Xavier junior touched in 4:25.73 to win the event ahead of Cov. Catholic’s Smith (4:27.76) who claimed his second silver of the afternoon. Paul Dunbar’s Chase Mattingly was third (4:34.69).
