New York Men’s High School State Championships

By Brian Savard

EAST MEADOW, New York, April 3. IRONDEQUOIT senior Ricky Henahan all but ensured a lock to be one of the top eight high school swimmers in the country in the 100 backstroke with a state-record performance at the New York State Championships.

Henahan, a Swimming World four-star recruit bound for the University of Tennessee in the fall, fired off a 23.52 opening 50 split before bringing his final 50 home in 25.38, bringing his final time to a sub 49-second 48.90. Henahan's swim improved upon his 2007 state record time of 49.65. Before winning the 100 backstroke in record time, Henahan took top honors in the 100 butterfly with a 49.76 time.

Tom Luchsinger of Mt. Sinai erased the oldest record in the men's state record book with a 1:39.38 200 freestyle time. Luchsinger darted out to a 47.60 opening 100, opening up a large lead that second-place Ryan Feeley of Rye couldn't overcome. Luchsinger's performance erased John Hodge of Williamsville North's 1985 record of 1:39.77. Luchsinger went .05 slower in his 100 freestyle finals swim than he split out in his 200 freestyle record time, placing fifth.

Feeley distanced himself from the rest of the field on the third 100 of his 500 freestyle, erasing another ancient New York state record. His 4:29.82 swim nipped the 1994 standard of 4:30.27 set by Ken MacFadyen from BellMore in 1994. Feeley placed second in the 200 freestyle with a 1:40.99.

Jacob Johnson from Shenendehowa cranked out wins in each of the sprint freestyle events. He started off by clocking a 21.44 50 freestyle before winning by nearly a second in the 100 (46.48).

Shawn Hoffman of North Tonawanda took the diving title with ease, scoring a 498.10. Chris Zukas of Elmira placed second in the event with a 443.50 score while Chris Arcara from Williamsville North claimed the bronze with a score of 434.90.

Shenendehowa finished the meet atop the team standings with a final point total of 230. Long Beach edged out Pittsford for second by a score of 185-183.5.
