New Orleans vs. North Texas

DENTON, Texas, February 9. NORTH Texas swimming closed out its regular season with a convincing win over the University of New Orleans 133-86, Saturday morning at the Pohl Recreation Center. The Mean Green dominated the meet from the get-go as it won 13 out of the 14 events and placed second in the only race it lost.

"It was a great day for us," said head coach Joe Dykstra. "We won the meet by a lot and it was a good performance. It was good for the team to be able to change the lineup and place some swimmers in events they don't usually swim. It gives us a chance to evaluate people at different spots before conference."

Dykstra said that a big win like the one today is a great way to end the regular season and gather a full head of steam momentum heading into the conference championships. Distance swimmers participated in sprint races and a few of the faster swimmers took part in the longer races. Out of the different lineups, perhaps the most entertaining race of the day was the 1,000-yard freestyle between Georgetown freshman Rosita Bado and teammate/cousin Taryne Cantillo. The two switched leads in several points during the 40 length race before Cantillo flashed a final gust of speed on the finishing length to win the race over Bado by .15 of a second; 11:04.00 to 11:04:15.

"It was a fun race," Dyksta said. "Neither of them usually swim that event, but they are both more than capable to swim long distance and with them being cousins, it ensured that it was going to be a competitive
race and it was."

Fifteen of NT's total points came from senior Bonnie Garcia-Meitin. Garcia-Meitin, a senior from Angleton, Texas, placed first the 50 free; a race she usually does not swim yet still won. Garcia-Meitin, along with seven other Mean Green seniors: Hannah Bakke, Angelica Gentile, Christina
Hammervold, Brittany Hosner, Amanda Neal and Victoria Streusand, were all honored before meet.

North Texas has won three of its last four duals including impressive showings over Houston and TCU heading into the Sun Belt Conference Championships at the end of the month.

Special thanks to North Texas for contributing this report.
