New Hampshire Women Add New Assistants

DURHAM, New Hampshire, August 28. UNIVERSITY of New Hampshire head women’s swimming & diving coach Joshua Willman announced the hiring of Nicole Pohorenec and Shannon Daly as two new additions to his staff for the 2006-2007 season.

Pohorenec will take the helm for the Wildcat divers. She graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in special education. There, she dove for five-time NCAA Division I Diving Coach of the Year and Olympian Matt Scoggin and competed in both the one-meter and three-meter springboard while specializing on the platform. Pohorenec was a five-time All-American for Texas and was the Division I National Champion on platform in 2004 and placed eighth in three-meter that same year. She was also the 2002 runner up on platform during her freshman year.

Pohorenec was on the U.S. National Team for seven years diving at the elite level since 1998. Poherenec consistently placed in the top 10 nationally throughout her career and winning the Speedo National Junior Championship in 2000 and going on to win the US National Indoor Title on Platform in 2001. In 2002, Pohorenec placed fourth at the World Cup Trials and at the 2004 US Olympic Trials she placed seventh individually and third in synchronized.

Internationally, Poherenec has an impressive resume as well. In 1999, while still in high school she placed fourth at the XIIth World Junior Championships and in 2001 at the IX FINA World Championships placed sixth in the synchro and 13th individually.

Pohorenec grew up in Florida diving for Team Orlando and renowned coach Jay Larew.

“I cannot tell you how fortunate we are to have someone of Nicole’s caliber directing our diving program,” Willman said. “Nicole has had some of the best coaches in the world and she is eager to share her experiences and what she has learned from them with our divers.”

A former UNH standout NCAA Qualifier and school-record holder, Daly will serve as assistant swimming coach. Hailing from Brightwaters, N.Y., Daly won three individual events as a freshman, broke an America East record and was selected as the America East Swimmer of the Year in 2003. During her sophomore year in 2004, she was selected ECAC Swimmer of the Year as the women’s team won the ECAC Championship team title. She currently holds six school records; three individual and five relays. She was instrumental in back-to-back 2005 and 2006 America East Championship team titles.

During the 2005-2006 dual-meet season, Daly was undefeated in her signature event, the 200 breaststroke, and was named America East Swimmer of the Week twice. At the America East Championships, she set the meet on fire and set six conference records; three individual and three relays. Daly won the 200 IM, 100 breaststroke and shattered a seven-year old record in the 200 breaststroke. Swimming key legs on the 800 free relay, 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay, Daly helped put the Wildcats over the top to win their fifth conference title. Daly achieved NCAA qualifying times in four individual events; the 200 freestyle, 200 IM, and the 100 and 200 breaststrokes. Daly was one of two UNH swimmers to be invited to compete at the NCAA Swimming Championships and placed 23rd nationally for the Wildcats. Daly was most recently named an Academic All-American by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America.

“Shannon’s work ethic and passion for the sport sets an excellent example and is motivation for the entire team.” Willman said. “Her experience at the elite level will be ideal as she coordinates the recruiting for the Wildcats this season in addition to her on deck duties.”
