New England Small College Athletic Conference Championships, Day Two

WILLIAMSTOWN, Massachusetts, February 25. WILLIAMS College leads the 2012 NESCAC Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships at the conclusion of the second day of competition at the Samuelson-Muir Pool on the campus of Williams College by a 52.5-point margin, as the Ephs have accumulated 1,414.5 points.

Amherst is second with 1,362 points, while Connecticut College is third with 744 points.

Williams entered the second night of the championships holding a slim 17.5 point lead over Amherst. With the three individual wins on the night and taking the 800 freestyle relay Williams was able to increase its lead over rival Amherst. Individual wins by the Ephs came from Christian Gronbeck (1,000 Freestyle), Paul Dyrkacz (400IM) and Tom Vieth (200 Freestyle).

The 2012 NESCAC Championships will conclude on Sunday night. Six swimming events and the 3-meter dive remain to be contested tomorrow night.

The first final on the second night was the 200 Medley Relay and Connecticut College won the event in a time of 1:32.42. The winning quartet of Camels included Tim Walsh, Kirk Celewicz, Patrick McGinnis, and Sam Gill.

In the 1,000 Freestyle Williams’ freshman Christian Gronbeck took top honors in a time of 9:28.92, followed by Amherst sophomore Conor McAuliffe (9:30.36). Third place went to the Ephs’ John Armstrong (9:32.56).

The 400 Individual Medley Relay finals featured four of the eight competitors being from Williams. Williams junior Paul Dyrkacz won the event for the second straight year with a pool record 3:55.44.

The 100 Butterfly finals featured a NESCAC meet record effort by Connecticut College sophomore Sam Gill who came home in a pool record 48.73.

In the 200 Freestyle finals, five of the eight competitors were from Amherst, but the race was won by Williams junior Tom Vieth in a time of 1:38.91. Vieth was followed by a quartet of Amherst swimmers in places 2-5. Finishing second was senior Ryan Lichtenfels (1:40.39) and in third was freshman Connor Sholtis (1:40.56).

Amherst senior Ben McBratney set a meet and pool record in the 100 Breaststroke finals finishing in 56.29. Bowdoin’s Nathan Mecray, a senior, was second in 56.91.

The 100 Backstroke finals belonged to Connecticut College senior Tim Walsh who won for the fourth straight year. Walsh’s winning time was 49.78.

Capping off the competition for the night was the 800 Freestyle Relay, which was won by Williams in a time of 6:43.83 and featured a strong finish by junior Tom Vieth. Amherst was second in 6:46.26 and third was captured by Tufts in a time of 6:57.07. Joining Vieth in the winning effort by the Ephs were Paul Dyrkacz, Christian Gronbeck and Chris Weihs.
