BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil, Feb. 19.

Men Highlights

On a rainy morning of finals, Ryk Neethling (RSA) consolidated his status as the most victorious male swimmer (19 gold medals) in the championship circuit by winning the three events (100 free, 100 I.M. and 50 fly) he took part in today. In the I.M. race, Neethling led the event once he overcame a challenge by Thomas Rupprath (GER) in the backstroke leg.

In the 50 Fly, the Brazilian Kaio Almeida came close to Neethling after the turn but at the wall it was Neethling ahead by 0.14 s. In addition to his victories, Neethling has posted the highest scoring performance of the day (1031 points in the 100 I.M.).

The Russian team had an outstanding day of racing, accumulating 5 wins and a total of 7 medals. The Russian wins came from Roman Sludnov (50 and 200 breast), Nikolai Skvortsov (200 fly), Yuri Prilukov (400 free) and Elena Bogomazova (100 breast). Sludnov handily dominated the two Breast events. Prilukov had a tough battle with Dragos Coman (ROM) who took the lead of the race at the 100 and did not relinquish it until the last 50.

Prilukov´s strong kick in the last 100 carried him to the lead and to win by 0.82 s. Nykolai Skvorstov (RUS) led the (200 fly) from start to finish.
Thomas Rupprath (GER) won the 100 back (51.76) as expected from the World Cup record holder.

The crowds at the Minas Aquatic Park were treated to a strong victory by the local hero Thiago Pereira (BRA) in the 400 I.M. (4:15.69). Pereira´s lead was briefly challenged by Razvan Florea (ROM) at the end of the Back leg but the local came back during the Breast to retake the lead and go on to win by 2.38 s. The enthusiastic Brazilian crowds were also happy to see another compatriot, Lucas Salatta (BRA), rounding out the top three in this event. Pereira second medal of the day came when he placed third in the 100 I.M.

Women's Highlights

Kaitlin Sandeno (USA) was the only woman in this session to win more than one event (200 I.M. – 2:14.76, 200 free – 1:56.68). Sandeno led the I.M. race from start to finish. In that event, the battle was for second and third place between Yoo Nam (KOR) and Georgina Bardach (ARG), who caught up with the Korean at the end of the Breast laps and overtook her in the freestyle leg.

Sandeno´s victory in the 200 free came after overtaking Claudia Poll (CRC) just before the 150 turn. Poll was also overtaken by Camelia Potek (ROM) who got the silver. Sandeno´s day was rounded with a silver in the 200 back.

The other gold medal for the USA delegation came from Natalie Coughlin´s dominating peformance in the 100 fly (58.71). Coughlin also got a bronze medal in the 50 back, an event won by Ilona Hlavckova (CZE) with a 27.88 swim.

Angie Buschschulte (GER) handily beat the competition by 5.90s in the 200 back (2:08.02). Buschschulte came in second in the 50 back after Hlavckova (CZE).

Camelia Potek (ROM), who had placed second in 200 free earlier in the day, dominated the 800 free (8:31.76), beating Claudia Poll (CRC – 8:38.25) and the 14 year-old Kathryn Meaklim (RSA – 8:49.53).

In the women´s events, the highest scoring performance came from Therese Alshammar´s (SWE) swim in the 50 free prelims (24.39 – 976 points). Alshammar went on to win the final in this event (24.66). The locals were excited to see two Brazilian swimmers round out the podium in this event: Rebeca Gusmao (2nd – 25.12) and Flavia Delaroli-Cazziolato (3rd – 25.14).
Elena Bogomazova (RUS) led the 100 breast from start to finish (1:08.29) followed by Agustina Giovanni (ARG – 1:10.61) and Mariana Katsuno (BRA – 1:10.94).
