NCAP Snares Bruce Gemmell as Georgetown Prep Location Head Coach

DAMASCUS, Maryland, October 6. THE Nation's Capital Swim Club (NCAP) announced today that Bruce Gemmell, four-time member of USA Swimming's National Coaching Staff and Olympic Trials swimmer, will become the new head coach of the program's Georgetown Prep training site. Gemmell most recently served as the Head Senior Coach of the Delaware Swim Team and brings more than 20 years of coaching experience.

“We are very excited and fortunate to have Bruce join our program,” said Tom Ugast, CEO of NCAP. “His deep experience coaching at the age group, national and international levels will be a perfect fit for the high caliber NCAP training program at Georgetown Prep. There is no one better equipped to continue to build on the great success of our swimmers at this site.”

Gemmell swam for the University of Michigan and began his coaching career there under Jon Urbanchek. He has placed swimmers on USA Swimming's National “A” Team for four consecutive years and USA Swimming's Junior/Youth “A” Team six of the last seven years. He also has coached one of his swimmers to a spot on both the World Championship and Pan Pac Teams. Bruce's son Andrew, whom he has coached, won the 1500m freestyle at the 2012 Olympic Trials.

“I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to coach with the nation's top ranked swim club and lead its Georgetown Prep site where I will be fortunate to work with some of the most talented and promising young swimmers in the country,” Gemmell said. “I've long admired Yuri's work and the accomplishments of the NCAP swimmers at Georgetown Prep, and look forward to building on these great traditions. I'm also very proud of what we achieved with the Delaware Swim Team and will always consider myself part of their family.”

NCAP's Georgetown Prep site is best known as the home of Olympic Gold Medalist Katie Ledecky. Carsten Vissering, winner of the 100 breaststroke at the 2012 summer Junior Nationals, trains there, as well. This summer the Prep site sent 10 swimmers to Eastern Zones, 5 to Super Sectionals, and 3 to Junior Nationals, in addition to Ledecky's victory in London.

Gemmell will lead a strong coaching staff at the Prep site where NCAP runs a variety of programs. The squad includes veteran Bronze Group coach Richard Rosenthal who brings more than 15 years of coaching experience on top of his career as a teacher and lawyer; Silver and Bronze Group coach Meghan Thiel, a two-time Olympic Trials qualifier, four-time American University MVP, and two-time Patriot League Swimmer of the Year with six years of college and club coaching experience; Bronze Group coach Lauren Nickerson who recently joined the Club after coaching with the Cambridge Masters Swim Club at Harvard University, and serving as head varsity coach at high schools in Hawaii and Massachusetts; and Matt Mongelli, a Washington Post Coach of the Year who assists with the Gold and Silver Group programs, and serves as coach of the Georgetown Prep swim team.
