NCAA Women’s Swimming: #2 Georgia Upsets Top-Ranked Stanford

ATHENS, GA – The Georgia women’s swimming and diving team dominated the No. 1 Stanford Cardinal 187-113 in front of 1,314 at the Gabrielsen Natatorium on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Bulldogs won 11 of the 16 events and never trailed after the second event of the meet.

“We did a wonderful job racing today,” said Georgia head swim coach Jack Bauerle. “First of all, I want to congratulate our team on its performance, but Stanford was a little travel weary and will be a much different team in March. I was proud of our team from the beginning. Stanford brought out the best in us. Stefanie Williams’ win in the 200-yard free was probably the swim of the meet.”

In a meet that featured the two top women’s teams in the nation, the swimmer’s times reflected the strength of competition. Five swimmers set six automatic standards for the NCAA Championships and 21 provisional marks were surpassed. Stanford’s Misty Hyman blasted the field by four seconds in the 200-yard fly to set a Gabrielsen Natatorium pool record of 1:59.80. Hyman also won the 100-yard fly to complete her sweep of the butterfly events.

The pivotal race in the meet was taken by Lady Bulldog freshman Stefanie Williams in the 200-yard free. Williams’ time of 1:48.60 is her best of the season as well as a provisional standard for NCAAs.

Junior Kristy Kowal led the way for the No. 2 Dogs as she placed first in her three individual events. In the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke Kowal notched automatic qualifying standards of 1:00.87 and 2:12.42. She added a provisional standard of 2:02.62 with her first-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley.
