NCAA Women’s Division III Championship Blog, Day 3: Emory’s Katie Mroz

OXFORD, Ohio, March 14. IN addition to Shane Pelton's athlete blog on the Division II Championships, another swimmer will be keeping tabs on the Women's Division III Championships through an athlete blog for Swimming World. Katie Mroz from Emory University will be checking in with regular content from the meet

Mroz is a freshman swimmer at Emory University. Mroz, who hails from Libertyville, Ill., enters her first National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Championship meet after placing first as a member of the Emory 800 freestyle relay at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships. In addition, Mroz will compete in the 500 freestyle, the 200 freestyle and the 200 breaststroke at this year's NCAA Championships.

Last night was absolutely incredible. Dave Proffitt played the National Anthem on his electric guitar and with an old school amp. Not quite Jimi Hendrix, but it was still pretty legit. An interesting tidbit to the meet is an underwater camera set up at the far wall. The recording shows the turns of the swimmers right up on the scoreboard.

Amherst freshman Kendra Stern demolished the 500 free meet record with a 4:52.34 and freshman Liz Horvat from Emory took second. The 200 IM record that stood before the meet was broken a total of five times by Kaitlyn Orstein, Brittany Sasser, and Washington University's Meredith Nordbrock, who placed first, second and third, respectively. Ruth Westby won the 50 free by out touching Elizabeth Carlton by 3 one-hundredths of a second. A nail biter to say the least.

This morning started out with a whole lot of drama. The 200 medley relays took the stage at 11:00. After each heat, upwards of three relays had been disqualified including the big guns, such as Kenyon, Amherst and Denison. After some delay and discussion, NCAA officials decided that the relay pads had malfunctioned causing so many disqualifications. So the results stand, and all of the top relays will be in the pool tonight in a head to head that should blow your mind.

Tonight finals in the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast and 100 back will be swum as well as the 200 medley relay and the 800 free relay, which is a timed final event.
