NCAA Water Polo: Stanford Tops Rival Cal, 6-5

STANFORD, CA – The No. 4 Stanford Cardinal men’s water polo team defeated the No. 3 California Golden Bears, 6-5, Saturday at deGuerre Pool on the Stanford Campus. The Bears fall to 5-2 overall (1-1 in MPSF conference), while the Cardinal boosts its record to 8-1 overall (2-0 in MPSF conference).

The match was tied, 1-1, after the first period and 2-2 at halftime. Stanford then scored four goals in the third quarter to take a 6-3 lead. Cal mounted a fourth quarter comeback led by two-meter senior Ryan Flynn who scored two goals to cut the margin to 6-5 with 3:44 left in the match.

Cal senior goalkeeper Peter Kiefer collected six saves for the Bears, and Cal outshot Stanford, 11-6, during the course of the match.
