NCAA Men’s Water Polo: No. 3 UCLA Drops No. 6 Cal, 11-9

BERKELEY, CA – Senior Matt Armato scored two two-point goals and junior Adam Wright scored a pair, including one two-point goal to lead the No. 3 UCLA men’s water polo squad (6-1 overall, 1-0 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) to an 11-9 victory over California (3-3, 0-0 MPSF) in a non-conference matchup at Spieker Aquatics Complex on the Berkeley campus.

With the game tied 9-9 at the 3:59 mark in the fourth quarter, junior Andrew Bailey (San Clemente, San Clemente HS) scored the game-winning goal on a Bruin counter -attack. Junior Sean Kern (Honolulu, HI, Punahou HS) rebounded a shot by Armato (Long Beach, Wilson HS) and scored the put-back goal to seal the 11-9 victory with 1:39 to play.

The victory completes a sweep of the Bay Area schools on the road, as the Bruins upset No.1 Stanford 6-5 Saturday. UCLA will next face Long Beach State for a 7:00 p.m. match at Belmont Plaza on Tuesday, Oct. 5.
