NCAA Men’s Swimming: No. 1 Texas Downs No. 7 Georgia

AUSTIN, TX – The No. 1-ranked University of Texas men’s swimming and diving team exhibited great depth, with six Longhorns capturing nine individual-event victories, to give Texas a 133-108 win over seventh-ranked Georgia on Saturday night at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. With this win, head coach Eddie Reese’s Longhorns improve to a perfect 5-0 this season.

Texas was paced by sophomore Troy Dumais (Ventura, Calif. / Buena) and seniors Bryan Jones (College Station, Texas / A&M Consolidated) and Jon Younghouse (Cape Girardeau, Mo. / Cape Central), each of whom won two individual events.

Dumais, the 1999 NCAA Champion on the three-meter springboard, swept the one- and three-meter diving competitions to remain unbeaten on both boards this season. While comprehensive results are unavailable at this time, Dumais posted what is believed to be the best three-meter springboard dual-meet score in UT history to complete the diving sweep. On January 8 in competition for the Austin Cup at the All-American Diving Invitational, Dumais scored the highest total in collegiate history to capture the three-meter title.

Jones captured first place in both the 50- and 100-meter freestyle events, while Younghouse claimed victory in both the 400- and 800-meter freestyle. Junior Jamie Rauch (Houston, Texas / Cypress Creek) also finished first in the 200-meter freestyle, giving Texas a clean sweep of all of the individual freestyle events.

Also claiming individual-event wins for the Longhorns were junior Nate Dusing (Villa Hills, Ky. / Covington Catholic) and freshman Austin-native Ross Binkley (Austin, Texas / McCallum), who captured first-place honors in the 200-meter butterfly and 200-meter breaststroke, respectively.

The dual-meet victory marks the final home competition for Texas this season. The Longhorns return to competition on Friday-Saturday, January 28-29 when they travel to Tucson, Ariz. to take on the second-ranked Arizona Wildcats and 15th-ranked Arizona State in a triangular meet.
