NCAA Division III Preview: Kenyon Travels to Ohio State to Face Buckeyes

PHOENIX, Arizona, October 25. AFTER hosting the annual Kenyon Relays last weekend, the Kenyon men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will travel to Ohio State this evening for their first dual meet of the season.

Both the men’s and women’s teams looked to be in great shape last weekend, posting some solid split times in the relay-only meet. Katie Kaestner has already put up impressive times in the sprint breaststroke and IM events, with a 29.96 in the 50 breast and 59.79 in the 100 IM. Teammate Celia Oberholzer should put up major points in the backstroke events after posting a 26.98 lead-off split last weekend. Kaestner should give Ohio State swimmers Amy Bopp and Rachael Dzierzak a run for their money in the breaststroke events, as both swimmers have posted times under 1:05.5 in the 100 breast this season. Oberholzer should be in the mix to score big points in backstroke as well if she can be in the 57-second range tonight.

The Kenyon men will look to sophomore Ryan Funk to lead the way this evening, as he was recently named NCAC Athlete of the Week after swimming on four of Kenyon’s winning relays last weekend. Funk earned All-American honors in two events as a freshman last season and can give the Buckeyes a run in fly, back and free events.

Besides Kenyon, only one of the top ten teams will swim this weekend. Catholic University, ranked seventh, will take on St. Mary’s. In other meets, Colorado College and Mills will face UC-Santa Cruz on Saturday, while UW-Eau Claire, St. Cloud State and UW-Stevens Point will swim in a tri-meet.
