NCAA Division III Championships: Kenyon Pushes Leading Total

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota, March 20. KENYON kept on rolling at the NCAA Division III Championships held in Minneapolis.

Kenyon's men finished the day with 482 points, while Emory stood second with 324 points. Denison (234.5), St. Olaf (205) and Amherst (117) made up the rest of the top five.

The Kenyon women amassed 426 points, while Denison held second with 312 points. Emory (311.5), Williams (279.5) and Calvin (151) finished the day third through fifth.

Williams' Logan Todhunter became the top division III butterfly specialist in history as she swept the division records with a top time in the 200-yard fly. Todhunter clocked a 1:57.71 during prelims to take down Whitworth's Samantha Kephart's 2:00.15 set in 2006. Todhunter then won in finals with a 1:57.80 after setting the 100 fly record last night. Teammate Bonnie Patchen finished second in 2:02.45, while Washington's Rachel Glasser took third in 2:03.13.

Pedro Monteiro's 1997 record of 1:45.19 in the men's 200-yard fly held up as Kenyon's Matthew Harris (1:46.74) led a team sweep of the top three. Joseph Pysnik (1:47.75) and Douglas Huguenard (1:47.75) tied for second.

Another record held up as Brittany Sasser's 53.85 last year for Amherst withstood Denison's Olivia Zaleski (54.80). Linfield's Rose Hollingsworth finished second in 56.18, while Washington's Karina Stridh tied Emory's Tess Pasternak for third with matching 56.37s.

Johns Hopkins' John Thomas set the division record with a 48.52 during prelims before winning with a 48.65 at night. Kenyon's Estevao Avila held the previous record with a 48.61 back in 2001. Denison's Robert Barry finished second in 49.43, while Kenyon's Michael Mpitsos touched third in 49.46.

A record that may take quite some time to fall, Lindsay Payne's 100 breast standard of 1:00.54 wasn't even sniffed. Kenyon's Tracy Menzel captured the title in 1:02.76, while teammate Alisa Vereshchagin took second in 1:03.49. Ithaca's Lauren Botterbusch rounded out the top three in 1:03.87.

Staten Island's Pavel Buyanov lowered his record in the 100 breast with a time of 54.27. The effort erased his 54.49 set last year. St. Olaf's Nelson Westby wound up second in 54.48, while MIT's Rastislav Racz touched third in 54.80.

Erica Deur of Calvin captured the women's three-meter diving title with 496.05 points, while SUNY Fredonia's Kelly Sponholz (454.70) and Trinity's Lindsay Martin (441.60) completed the podium.

Emory's Ruth Westby (1:48.55), Katie Mroz (1:51.25), Mary Tripp (1:52.02) and Liz Horvat (1:49.23) set the women's 800-yard free relay division record in 7:21.05. The time beat the 7:22.78 set by Amherst last year. Kenyon's David Curtis (1:38.17), John Geissinger (1:36.88), Callen Hetterich (1:39.92) and Dan Thurston (1:37.94) smashed the division record in the men's 800-yard free relay with a time of 6:32.91. The swim destroyed the 6:36.26 set by Kenyon in 2002.
