NCAA Division I Women’s Champs: Arizona’s Lara Jackson Blasts Splash-and-Dash 50 Free

COLUMBUS, Ohio, March 20. ARIZONA's Lara Jackson, fresh off the American record in the 200 free relay, moved to third all time in the 50 free with a jaw-dropping effort of 21.69 at the NCAA Division I Championships.

Jackson's performance tied her with Maritza Correia for third all-time, as Correia clocked a 21.69 in 2002. The only two swimmers ahead of her are Natalie Coughlin with her American record swim of 21.46, and Kara Lynn Joyce with her NCAA record of 21.63.

The victory gave Arizona only its third win in the event in NCAA history as Diane Johnson won the initial event in 1982 and Ashley Tappin captured the title way back in 1995.

Tennessee's Michele King touched in second with a scintillating time of 21.86 to move into a seventh-place tie all time with Tammie Stone of Texas, who set her time in 2001.

Meanwhile, UC Santa Barbara's Anna May placed third with a swift time of 22.00.

Arizona made up some serious ground in the event with four point scorers as the Wildcats finished the event with 111 points. Auburn dropped back to second with 98 points, while Texas A&M stood third with 70 points. California (61) and Tennessee (50) rounded out the top five.
