FEDERAL WAY, Washington, March 23. CALIFORNIA's Tom Shields, the 2010 NCAA titlist in the men's 100-yard fly, reclaimed the championship hardware with a personal best at the NCAA Division I Men's Championships.

Shields threw down a 44.76 for the win, besting his time of 44.78 from last year's NCAAs. He remained fifth fastest all time behind Ian Crocker's 44.72 from 2004. The triumph is California's fifth all time in the event with other Golden Bear victors being Par Arvidsson (1979, 80) and Duje Draganja (2005). Shields also became just one of 15 men to win multiple 100 fly titles in the event's history at the NCAA Championships.

Arizona's Giles Smith placed more than a second behind with a 45.77 for second. That isn't the largest margin of victory however, as Ian Crocker of Texas (49.07) beat California's Milorad Cavic (50.81) by 1.74 seconds in 2004.

Florida's Marcin Cieslak (45.86), Michigan's Dan Madwed (45.91), Texas' Jimmy Feigen (46.29), Texas' Neil Caskey (46.33), California's Mathias Gydesen (46.36) and Duke's Ben Tuben (46.84) also swam in the championship finale.

Michigan's Sean Fletcher topped the consolation final with a 45.98, while Georgia's Michael Arnold touched second in 46.33. Michigan State's Jacob Jarzen (46.47), Alabama's Alex Coci (46.50), Arizona's Woody Joye (46.70), Texas A&M's Boris Loncaric (46.72), Stanford's Geoffrey Cheah (46.95) and Georgia's Doug Reynolds (47.04) also competed in the B final.

California held onto its lead with 243.5 points, while Texas (203.5) stood second. Arizona (199), Stanford (187) and Michigan (151) rounded out the top five.
