NCAA Div. I Women: Washington State Caps Best Season Ever With a Second Win Over Oregon State

CORVALLIS, Ore., Feb. 3. THE WASHINGTON State University women’s swim team put the finishing touches on the winningest dual-meet season in the team’s 25-year history with a 113-92 win over Oregon State University Saturday. The Cougars’ nine wins this season surpasses the old record of eight, which had been achieved three times, most recently in 1996-97.

The Cougars completed a two-day sweep of the Beavers Saturday, after a 138-124 victory Friday night at Stevens Natatorium.

WSU won seven of 11 events Saturday, including both relays, making the Cougars victorious in all four relay events in the series.

Cougar freshman Andree-Anne LeRoy (Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada) broke the Stevens Natatorium record with her time of 2 minutes, 6.89 seconds in the 200
individual medley. LeRoy had a total of seven wins in the two meets, four in individual events and three with relay teams.

"Oregon State is a talented team with very tough racers," LeRoy said. "All the races were very close and exciting. We were much more aggressive than we were last week in Reno, which definitely accounted for our better performance. It was a great win."

Taryn Ternent, a freshman from Edenvale, South Africa, again won the 50 and 100 freestyle for WSU, bringing her two-day win total to seven (four individual events, three relays). Saturday Ternent clocked in with times of 24.19 seconds in the 50 freestyle and 53.05 in the 100 freestyle.

"Oregon State was a very, very good team," Ternent said. "They’re up and coming just like us. Both meets this week were very close and exciting."

Freshman Rachel Dong (Paramount, Calif.) won the 200 freestyle for the Cougars in a time of 1:55.07 seconds, moving her into 10th on WSU’s all-time list for that event. Dong also swam on both winning relay teams, leading off the 400 freestyle relay with a leg of 53.21 seconds, which moved her into ninth place
on the school’s list for the 100 freestyle. She played a role in six WSU wins in the two days (two individual and four relays).

"It was difficult coming off a tough loss to Nevada last weekend, but our team was really fired up, and we were able to pull it together when we needed to,"
Dong said. "We started out aggressive, and were able to come through in some really exciting races."

Also swimming well for the Cougars, freshman Katie Byrnes (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) added a win in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2 minutes 6.56 seconds.
Semah Zavareh, a freshman from Houston, Texas, moved her name into eighth place on WSU’s all-time list in the 1000 freestyle with her second-place time of 10:27.26.

The Cougars, now 9-3 this season (3-1 Pac-10) hope to carry their momentum into the Pacific-10 Conference Championships, which will be hosted by WSU at the
Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatics Center in Federal Way, Wash., February 22-24.
