NCAA Div. I Women: UCLA Downs UC Santa Barbara, Oregon State in Season Opener

SANTA BARBARA, Calif., October 10. IN the first meet of the 2003-04 swimming and diving season, the defending Pac-10 champion UCLA Bruins defeated the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos 152.5-102.5 and the Oregon State Beavers 148-108.

The Bruins improve their overall record to 20-0 all-time against the Gauchos and 3-0 against the Beavers. UCLA is now 2-0 on the season, and 1-0 in Pac-10 competition.

Leading the way for the Bruins was freshman Katie Nelson. Nelson was a double event winner in the 500 and 1000 yard Free in 4:55.55 and 10:00.90, respectively, against both UC Santa Barbara and Oregon State.

Other Bruins victorious against both the Gauchos and Beavers were seniors Kristen Lewis (200 Fly, 2:03.20), Sara Platzer (50 Free, 23.74), Malin Svahnstrom (100 Free, 53.37), Naoko Watanabe (200 Back, 2:03.11) and sophomore Kim Vandenberg (100 Fly, 55.85).

Other Bruin winners were senior Leslie Hovsepian and sophomore Shellene Catalano, who won the 100 Breast (1:06.77) and 200 Breast (2:21.52), respectively, against UC Santa Barbara.

The UCLA 200 Medley Relay team of Watanabe, Hovsepian, Lewis and Platzer was also victorious, defeating Oregon State in 1:46.46.

The Bruins will return to action November 8, at noon, hosting the University of San Diego in the first home meet of the season. The meet will take place at the Men's Gym Pool.
