NCAA Div. I Women: Stanford Leads After Day One at Pac-10s. Arizona’s Emily Mason Posts Nation’s Top 500 This Year

BELMONT SHORES, CA., Feb. 28. ARIZONA froshwoman Emily Mason swam the fastest 500 of the year to highlight opening-day results of this year's women's Pac-10 Championships.

Mason, a Phoenix native who was high-point winner at last summer's Mission Viejo Invitational before matriculating to Wildcat country in the fall, went
a pr and Pac-10 meet-record 4:38.79 to take the measure of Stanford's defending champ, Jessica Foschi, who clocked 4:39.49 for second.

Foschi's swim was just off her seasonal-best and previous national-leader 4:38.95 from the Longhorn Invitational in Austin last December.Mason was in that race too and swam a then pr 4:41.08 for second.

Stanford, last year's runners-up both here and at NCAAs, has a solid 76-point lead with Cal second (366) and host USC third (365.5). Fourth is Y2K Pac-10 champ Arizona (297) followed by defending champ UCLA (259).

Aside from Stanford, UCLA and Arizona are the only schools ever to win a Pac-10 women's swim championship, and each has only accomplished that feat
once.

Foschi's old Pac-10 meet record from last season was a 4:39.74. Her career-best is a 4:37.81 that won her first NCAA title last March at the Goodwill Games Pool on Long Island. That swim ranks Foschi fifth and
seventh, respectively, on the all-time performers-performances list).

The American, NCAA and Stanfrod record is 4:34.39 by Janet Evans when she swam on The Farm as a freshman a dozen years ago. The best non-Evans 500 is a 4:35.45 by former Columbia All-America (and Sydney Olympian too) Christina Teuscher, when she won NCAAs four years ago. (Second-best performer-performance.)

Mason's time, while her career-best, is not the 'Cats' school-record. That mark is a 4:38.48 by Cheryl Simmons, who swam it while finishing second to Florida's Tami Bruce (4:38.22) at the '88 NCAAs in Austin. Second-best is Trina Jackson's 4:38.57 that also got her a second a decade later at NCAAs in Minneapolis.

So Mason is third — but movin' on up in a hurry.

Buried in the runner-up spot in the consols was USC freshman Kaitlin Sandeno, who clocked an NCAA "B" cut of 4:47.87 — far off her pr of 4:39.09 from last year's Speedo Challenge meet here at Belmont.

Sandeno was a Sydney Olympian the year before. So far, however, at Troy she has made few — if any — waves; but that may well change tomorrow come the 400 IM, one of her specialties.

The other outstanding individual swim was by Stanford senior and captain Shelly Ripple, who went a Pac-10 meet-record 1:56.64 to win the 200 IM.

The old record belonged to Cal's Joscelin Yeo, who's now at Texas, when she clocked a 1:57.14 to win here two seasons ago. Yeo won the Big 12 200 IM last weekend in a seasonal-pr 1:58.00. Her career-best is still that 1:57.14, swum while wearing blue and gold.

The national-leader is Auburn's Maggie Bowen, who went an SEC meet-record 1:56.51 at Arkansas last week. Bowen holds the American-NCAA standard off her 1:55.49 that won NCAAs last year and she also won the 200 meter IM gold at last summer's World Championships.

With her, Ripple (pr 1:56.24 from last year's NCAAs that got her the silver), Yeo and USC's Michala Kwasny (third at NCAAs in a pr and SC school-record 1:57.60) plus othjer women, this could be the race of the meet
next month at Austin — site of the NCAA DI Championships.

Kwasny was second tonight in 1:59.11.

Not only will Ripple be after Bowen's "scalp" at Austin but she'd also like to get the Stanford school-record of 1:55.54, set by Summer Sanders en route to the NCAA title a decade ago — which only Bowen has surpassed.

(Of course, the "kicker" in this whole equation is Cal's Natalie Coughlin, American-NCAA record-holder in the 100-200 back and collegiate record-holder in the 100 fly. If she'd swim this race at NCAAs rather than double in the 100 back-fly on Day 2 that could be a very interesting race indeed. Coughln's pr is "only" 1:58+ but put her in with Bowen, Ripple & Co. and
sparks will fly, guaranteed.)

Cal, with Coughlin splitting a superquick 21.64 second-leg (fastest by far), won the 200 free relay in a Pac-10 meet-record 1:30.47. The all-time Pac-10 record is Arizona's 1:29.18 and the American-NCAA standard is 1:28.89 by Texas.

Olympian Staci Stitts, a world-class breaststroker and Sydney Olympian, led off in 23.57. Coughlin followed, then Danielle Becks went a 22.72 and Michelle Harper anchored in 22.54.

The American-NCAA 50 free record is 21.77 by Olympic gold medalist Amy Van Dyken from eight years ago. Coughlns's pr is 22.21, fastest nationally.

Ripple had a fast 22.27 second-leg for Stanford's runner-up team that went 1:30.96. The NCAA "A" cut is 1:31.09.

Stanfrod freshman Lacey Boutwell won the 50 free (22.93) with UCLA's Sara Platzer (23.09) second. Boutwell's been 22.7+ earlier in the season and the auto cut is 22.82. "B" cut is 23.50.

On the 1-meter board, USC's Blythe Hartley topped Stanford frosh Ashlee Rosenthal for the Trojans' sole win.

Stanford closed the proceedings with a 3:36.54 400 medley relay win, with froshwoman Amy Wanger leading off in a pr 55.17. Ripple had a superb fly leg (51.65) but you-know-who was even quicker (50.68).

Cal was second (3:37.07) and Arizona State (3;37.46) plus Arizona (3:38.74) were all under the NCAA auto cut of 3:39.60.

ASU's Agnes Kovacs, reigning Olympic and World 200 breast champ, swam the fastest leg of her specialty with a 59.39. The fastest leadoff was Arizona's Beth Botsford's 53.86, while Cal senior Alice Henriquez –who has made great strides this season — went a pr 54.18 for the second-fastest back leg.

Botsford was Olympic gold medalist in the 100 back at Atlanta.
