NCAA Div. I Women: #9 Cal Upsets #4 USC, 167-133

BERKELEY, Cal., January 31. LED by Natalie Coughlin's triple and doubles from Danielle Becks, Staciana Stitts and Helen Silver, No. 9-ranked California women's swimming team (7-2, 3-1) set two pool- and dual meet record in a 167-133 upset win over fourth-ranked USC this afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Complex.

Coughlin, double-triple defending NCAA champ in the 100-200 backs and 100 fly, won the 200 free (1:47.24), the 200 fly (1:56.04) and the 100 fly (51.88) to pace the Bears.

Stitts, a Sydney Olympian, doubled in the breaststrokes (1:01.05-2:13.57); Becks won both sprints (50, 23.37; 100, 50.76) and froshwoman Silver, a virtual "walk on," won both backstrokes (100, 55.79; 200, pr 1:58.25). She also led off the Bears' winning 400 medley relay comprised also of Stitts, Coughlin and Becks, which set a Cal dual meet record too.

Oh, by the way: that 51.88 for Coughlin in the 100 fly? It's only a pool- and meet-record but — BUT — also fastest-ever in a dual-meet. Who held the old record? If you said "Natalie Coughlin , 51.90 against Georgia last Nov. 1" you know your best times. Coughlin of course also holds theAmerican/NCAa record in the100 fly (50.01) from last year's NCAAs in Austin.

Coughlin's old 100 fly pool record was a 52.36 in 2001, her freshman year and then the national dual meet record too.

The Golden Bears started the meet with their record-breaking performance in the 400 medley relay with a 3:39.86 clocking, breaking the Spieker pool record and setting a dual meet record too. A Stanford 400 medley relay team held the previous record set in 2001.

Sophomore Marcelle Miller also etched her name into the Cal record-book with her pr in the 200 breast (2:16.81), good for third overall and No. 6 on Cal's all-time Top 10 list.

The sprint freestyle races were among Cal's strongest of the day, as the Bears went one-two-three in touching the wall in the 50 free; and took first, third and fourth in the 100 free. Freshman Whitney Rockwell placed second in the 50 free (23.55) as senior Michelle Harper came in third (23.70) and freshman Cheryl Anne Bingaman finished fourth (23.87). Bingaman placed third (52.01) and Harper finished fourth in the 100 free (52.27).

Coach Mark Schubert's Women of Troy got a strong effort from distance-specialist Margaret Pedder, a British Olympian, who won the 500 (4:53.11) and 1000 frees (9:56.66) to teammate Asa Sunderlund's 9:58.35. Pedder also was runner-up in the 200 fly (1:59.09).

USC's other swimming win came in the 200 IM where senior Michala Kwasny clocked 2:03.01 to Natalie Griffith's 2:03.77. Trojan Blythe Hartley, defending NCAA champ, was first on the 1-meter board (312.22) with teammate Nicci Fusaro (270.13) next. On the 3-metter, Fusaro was first (314.40) with Hartley second (304.90).

The Bears are back in action again Saturday, Feb. 1 to take on UCLA's Bruins at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The meet begins at noon. USC travls across the bay to swim Stanford.
