NCAA Div. I: Texas Sweeps SMU

DALLAS, Feb. 9. THE No. 3-ranked University of Texas men's and No. 3 UT women's swimming and diving teams both captured victories over SMU, respectively, to close out the 2001-02 dual meet season on Saturday,
Feb. 9, at Perkins Natatorium in Dallas.

The Texas women's squad opened the day's action with a victory over No. 8 Mustangs, 188-112, while the UT men's team followed with a 151-111 win over No. 15 SMU.

The win improves the women to 9-3 in dual meet competition and the men to 7-1.

Women's Meet
The Longhorns women were led by junior Erin Phenix (Cincinnati, Ohio), senior-transfer Valerie Oswald (Charlottesville, Va.) and junior-transfer Joscelin Yeo (Republic of Singapore/California), all of whom were double-event winners on the day. Phenix took control of the sprint free events, capturing top honors in both the 50 (23.32) and 100-yard (51.05) free, while Oswald led the way in the breaststroke,
capturing first in the 100 (1:04.43) and 200 (2:18.82).

Yeo finished first in the 100 butterfly (54.49) and the 200 IM (2:01.56).

Senior-transfer Lauren Thies (Portland, Ore./Stanford) also won an individual event, taking the 200 free in 1:49.27.

In diving, sophomore Ally Hartzell (Austin, Texas) led the way for Texas, winning on both the one-meter (299.02) and three-meter (289.87) springboard competitions.

Anu Koivisto led SMU with twin wins in the backstroks, taking the 100 in 55.59 and the 200 in 2:00.01. But she wasn't the Mustangs' only double winner. British Olympian Georgina Lee breezed in the 200 fly, touching in 1:57.61, then came back and doubled with a 4:46.54 performance to take the 500 and lead a 1-2-3 SMU sweep.

Swiss import Flavia Rigamonti lapped the field to win the 1000 free in 9:42.48, and finished second to Lee in the 500.

Men's Meet
The Texas men's squad was led to victory by the efforts of five different individual race winners and the performance of senior diver Troy Dumais (Ventura, Calif.).

Dumais, the two-time NCAA Diver of the Year (2000, 2001), led Texas on all springboard events, winning on the one-meter (363.97) and three-meter. With the wins, Dumais improves his season marks to a perfect 7-0 on the one-meter board and 6-1 on the three-meter board.

Senior Tommy Hannan (Baltimore, Md.) and sophomore Brendan Hansen (Havertown, Pa.) picked up two individual event wins each on Saturday. Hannan took top honors in the 100 (47.55) and 200 (1:45.54) fly, while Hansen swept the both breaststroke events, winning the 100 in 54.59 and the 200 in 1:58.74.

The American and NCAA record holder in the 200
breaststroke, Hansen ends the dual meet season with undefeated marks in both breast races, posting a 5-0 record in the 100 and a 6-0 mark in the 200.

Also tallying individual event wins on the day were junior Chris Kemp (Southlake, Texas) in the 200 free (1:37.91), sophomore Ian Crocker (Portland, Maine) in the 100 free (44.57) and junior Jim Pullin (Munroe
Falls, Ohio) in the 500 free (4:30.11).

Jakob Anderson was SMU's only double winner, taking the 100 backstroke in 48.56 and the 200 in 1:46.36.
He also swam on the winning SMU "D" team that took the 200 free relay in 1:20.83.

Matt Weghorst won the 50 free in 20.27, leading teammate Jonathon Newton (20.54) to the wall. Weghorst
was also a member of the winning D relay squad.

Also a member of that winning relay team was Michael Jacobson, who snared the last Mustang win, taking the 400 IM in 3:58.19. Teammate Jacob Rodriguez, at 4:00.88, was second.
