NCAA Div. I: Stanford Women Corral Longhorns, 168-132

STANFORD, Calif., Oct. 26. STANFORD (3-0) continued its strong start and remained unbeaten with a 168-132 victory over perennial national power Texas (1-1) in
a non-conference women's swimming and diving dual meet at the Avery Aquatic Center on Friday.

The victory was Stanford's second in a row over a national powerhouse as the Cardinal opened its competition this week with a win over defending NCAA champion Georgia on Wednesday. Texas finished third at the NCAA's last year.

"We have faced two great teams this week," said Stanford head coach Richard Quick. "For us to come away with two victories was extremely significant, and it's a good step towards where we want to be in March (at the NCAA Championships). Today was a terrific total team effort throughout our lineup, one of the best since I've been here at Stanford."

Stanford won 12 of the meet's 16 events, while Texas captured four.

Stanford senior Shelly Ripple won three individual events for the third straight meet this season, capturing the 100 yard fly (no official time), 200 yard fly (1:59.51) and 200 yard back (2:01.11).

Senior Jessica Foschi (500 yard free, 4:48.08; 1650 yard free, 16:55.75) and sophomore Tara Kirk (100 yard breast, 1:01.64; 200 yard breast, 2:16.10) each picked up a pair of victories.

Foschi's victory in the 500 yard free was her 12th in a row in the event dating back to last season. Kirk's victory in the 100 yard breast kept her unbeaten in the event as a collegian with nine wins and one co-victory.

A trio of freshmen also won individual events for the Cardinal. Amy Wagner won the 100 yard back (56.03), while Lacey Boutwell captured the 100 yard free (50.83) and Tami Ransom was a winner in the 400 yard IM (4:18.53).

Senior Kim Powers completed Stanford's individual winners with a victory in three-meter diving (283.65).

Individual winners for Texas were senior Lauren Thies (200 yard free, 1:47.81), a transfer from Stanford, junior Joscelin Yeo (50 yard free, 23.41) and freshman Nicole Pohorenic (one-meter diving, 268.05).

The teams split the two relay events with a Cardinal squad of Wagner, Kirk, Ripple and Boutwell winning the 400 yard medley relay (3:41.90). A Longhorn team of freshman Kaela Humphries, junior Tanica Jamison, sophomore Jacinta Van Lint and freshman Michelle Molina captured the 400 yard free relay (3:27.03).

Three swimmers set NCAA "A" Qualifying Standards with Ripple (200 yard fly, 1:59.51) and Kirk (100 yard breast, 1:01.64) recording NCAA "A" marks for the Cardinal, while Thies (200 yard free, 1:47.81) picked up an NCAA "A" mark for the Longhorns.

Pohorenic reached an NCAA Diving Qualifying mark in both the one-meter (268.05) and three-meter (274.87) competitions for Texas. Powers reached the NCAA mark in the three-meter event (283.65). A trio of Cardinal freshmen (Ashlee Rosenthal, 267.30; Erica Sorgi, 261.90; Lauren Donovan, 255.82) recorded NCAA marks in the one-meter diving event.

The Stanford diving team will next host the Stanford Invite (November 3-4), while the swimmers will be out of meet action until traveling to the Texas Invite (November 30 – December 2).
