NCAA Div. i Men: Virginia Closes In On 5th Straight ACC Crown

CHAPEL HILL, NC, February 28. VIRGINIA appears to be well on its way for an unpecedented five-peat after the conclusion of Day 2's action at the 2003 Atlantic Coast Conference men's swimming and diving championships.

The Cavaliers of 25-year veteran UVA coach Mark Bernardino, who has won the last four ACC championships and added the women's crown last week, will tie a school record by winning their fifth-consecutive title Saturday. The Cavs' men's soccer team has also five-peated in the ACC.

Similar to Michigan, which is currently leading the men's Big 10 Championship race and won the 400 individual medley and the 800 freestyle relay tonight, the Cavaliers — with sophomore Chris (Bo) Greenwood taking the honors — won the 400 IM and then followed with a second gold in the 800 free relay.

The Cavs are on top with 509 points, followed by Florida State's 397. Third after a strong performance this evening is host North Carolina (377.5), while Georgia Tech, which had an event winner and a silver-medalist too, lies fourth (315). Fifth is North Carolina State (237), sixth is Clemson (205), seventh is Maryland (147) and eighth comes Duke (107.5).

As was the case opening night, this evening Florida State raced to the meet's first gold, winning the 200 medley in 1:28.44 (NCAA "B" cut), about three quarters of a second off the meet record of 1:27.92 by North Carolina State from Y2K.

The ACC record is 1:26.49 by Florida State from four years ago.

Cav sophomore Greenwood scored his second gold of the proceedings when he clocked 3:47.56 to win the 400 individual medley, off his meet- and ACC-record 3:44.99 from last year's chanmpionships, Second was Georgia Tech's Shilo Ayalon (pr and Tech-record 3:48.31), who thus earns his second silver as he was a close second in the 500 free.

Casv rookie Fran Crippen, who won the 500 free in 4:18+, was third in the medley with his pr 3:49.82. The top three made the "B" standard (3:54.10).

Now it was time for the host team Tar Heels to grab the limelight and did they ever, winning the next two events. Sophomore Eddy Matkovich, after qualifying first in the 100 fly (pr 47.17), showed his "heels" to the field in the finals with a pr 47.59 — just off the "A" cut of 47.34. The meet record is 47.09 by former Tar Heel Tucker Shade from 1998. A month later at NCAAs, Tucker set the ACC record with his 46.84 in the finals,

Clemson junior Rob Kummer went a pr and Tiger record 47.84 for the silver, Clemson's best individual showing so far,

UNC made it back-to-back victories when junior Yuri Suguiyama clocked 1:38.07 (NCAA "B") to win the 200 free, with teammates Justin Donato (1:38.97) and junior Mike Pigassou (1:39.01) taking the place and show spots for a Tar Heel sweep.

Nedless to say, veteran UNC coach Frank Comfort — who recorded his 500th career-victory earlier this season — then walked across the pool backwards!

Reality bit in the next race as Florida State swept the top two spots in the 100 breast. Seminole senior Justin Betts made his final ACC meet a memorable one as he won in 54.44 with a pr 54.39 from the prelims. Teammate Wickus Nieneber, a native of Swaziland, was next (pr 54.45). Virginia senior Jan Baird (pr 54.93) completed the tip three as each swimmer made the NCAA "B" cut of 55.92. The "A" cut is 54.30.

In the 100 back, Georgia Tech's Jeremy Raines got the Yellow Jackets their first gold with his pr and Tech record 49.02, The race's top qualifier, NC State's Steve Cowling (pr 48.64) was second in 49.06. Virginia's Luke Wagner was second-fastest qualifier (48.79) but faded in the finals and wound up fourth (49.26). "A" cut is 47.72 and the "B" standard is 48.15.

Virginia edged UNC by nearly a second to win the 800 free relay as the Cavaliers clocked 6:32.69 to the Heels' 6:33.36. Georgia Tech's 6:36.12 for third put it under the "B' cut of 6:38.21 along with the other two.
