NCAA Div. I Men: FSU Seminoles Cruise Against UNC-Wilmington

TALLAHASSEE, Fla., January 4. THE No. 25 Florida State men’s swimming and diving team defeated UNC-Wilmington, 154-120, Saturday afternoon at the Bobby Leach Center in Tallahassee.

FSU won 15 of 16 events, while improving their record to 7-2 on the season.

Junior Wickus Nienaber won two individual events and swam on two relays to lead the Seminoles to victory over the Seahawks. Nienaber swam winning times of 56.61 and 2:05.69 in the 100- and 200 breaststrokes, respectively.

Seniors Devin Crock and Joey Marshburn and freshman Joel Roycik joined Nienaber to win the 200 medley relay at 1:32.49. In the meet’s final event, the 200 free relay, Nienaber, senior Matt Carmen, junior Michael Paulus and sophomore Michael Averett won with a time of 1:22.64.

In diving, sophomore Louie Gagnet swept both the one- and three-meter springboards with winning marks of 315.20 and 320.05, respectively.

Paulus won the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 20.70, and Crock placed first in the 100 yard butterfly at 51.33.

Additional wins for the Tribe came from junior Fernando Jacome in the 200 free (1:40.95), freshman Chris Vythoulkas in the 100 yard backstroke (51.66), junior Matt Wheeler in the 200 fly (1:54.84), senior Nnamnse Ammons in the 100 free (45.90) and freshman Brent Campbell in the 200 back (1:55.39).

Saturday was the Seminoles' first action of the New Year, however FSU stayed active during the winter break with training and competition in the Florida Keys from Dec. 14-22. The Tribe competed at the Keys Relay Invitational, a meet comprised of 12 different relay events, on Dec. 18. The Seminoles swept their competition with perfect score of 168 after winning all 12 events.

The Seminoles will compete next against ACC foe NC State on Jan. 10, in Raleigh, N.C.
