NCAA Div. I Men: #1 Stanford Downs #7 USC, 144-87; Vendt, Marshall, Trupin, Cramer and Mellouli Set Pool, Meet Marks

STANFORD, Cal., February 8. THE number 1-ranked Stanford's men's swimming and diving team splashed past No. 7 USC, 144-87, this afternoon at Avery Aquatic Center.

End of story, right?

Wrong!

Trojan senior Erik Vendt, defending NCAA 1650-400 IM champ (and runner-up to former teammate Klete Keller in the 500 free) had an afternoon to remember.

The "most noble Trojan of them all" wowed the packed house with the fastest 1650 free ever in a dual meet (14:46.58); swam a near-pr 1:57.48 to win the 200 breast, and finished a very respectable second in the 200 back to Cardinal Peter Marshall.

Marshall's merely defending NCAA 100 back champ and one of the fastest – if not the fastest – backstrokers in the country.

Vendt's seasonal mile pr is a 14:42.97 from the Longhorn Invitational at Austin the first weekend in December, and that, of course, is the national-leader by some 15 seconds. His career pr and the Trojan record is 14:37.48 from last season's NCAAs — eighth on the all-time performances' list (fifth performer).

His 200 breast pr is 1:56.87, No. 2 on the all-time Trojan list, and it too was swum at Texas — against the Longhorns' double-defending NCAA champ Brendan Hansen. Former Trojan great John Naber,a quadruple gold-medalist at the Montreal Olympics (both backstrokes, 800 free-400 medley relays) was an excellent miler as well as a world record-setting dorsal specialist.

But Naber was not a breaststroker or IMer and Vendt's versatility puts him in a league of his own. One might even say his performance was "Coughlinesque.

In any event, to go a 14:46 mile, then come back and go a 1:57.4 200 breast and a 1:46+ 200 back … hey, Coach Mark Schubert, give the guy a break!

"He just doesn't get tired. I've coached some great athletes over the years but this guy is really amazing. He has the strength and stamina to do whatever it takes and he keeps coming back for more," Schubert marveled.

The American/NCAA-1650 record is 14:26.62 by Michigan's Chris Thomspon from the collegiate championships at College Station two years ago. Thompson did that time after setting the AR the previous summer en route to the bronze at Sydney in the 1500 free.

Vendt last summer broke the world record in the 400 IM but unfortunately there was a guy just a few hundredths faster — a certain Mr. Phelps. He also was America's fastest miler, so Schubert adds that he "isn't surprised" by his star pupil's sterling performances.

"He's been good all season and we just hope the improvement continues through confernece and NCAAs."

Will Vendt be in a record-breaking mode at Pac-10s the first weekend of March?

Stanford improves to 7-0, 3-0 in the Pac-10, while the Trojans fall to 5-3, 2-2 in league action.

Five pool records were broken on the afternoon including the 400 medley relay, 200 IM, 1650 freestyle, 200 butterfly and the 500 freestyle.

It was the final home meet for five Stanford senior swimmers – Randall Bal, Pat Fowler, John Waters, Dan Westcott and Thomas Zochowski

The Cardinal opened the meet with a pool-record in the 400 medley relay. Marshall, Michael Bruce, Jayme Cramer and Bobby O'Bryan combined for a time of 3:10.82 to shatter the old pool record of 3:12.32 set by Stanford in 1999. The time is, of course, also No. 1 nationally, as is Marshall's 46.17 leadoff leg.

That swim, incidentally, is second on the all-time dual-meet list to his 45.61 against Cal here at Avery a year ago. Marshall's career-pr is 45.54, sixth and
third on the respective all-time lists and just .11 behind Brian Retterer's Cardinal- and Pac-10 record 45.43 from a decade ago.

Vendt followed with his pool-record in the 1650 free. His time also broke ex-Cardinal Jeff Kostoff's meet-record of 14:50.58 set in 1984. Cardinal Matt Sorlien was second, clocking an NCAA "B" cut of 15:14.91.

Stanford next posted a 1-2-3 finish in the 200 free, senior John Waters taking top honors with his 1:37.02. Defending NCAA 200 IM-200 back champ Markus Rogan was second (1:37.66) followed by Jayme Cramer (1:38.59).

Another 1-2-3 finish was in store for the Cardinal in the 50 free as senior Randall Bal led the field, clocking in at 20.18. Junior Bobby O'Bryan (Pac-10 100 fly champ as a freshman) placed second (20.30) while Scott Ransenberg and Andrew Schnell tied for third (20.69).

In the 200 IM, Stanford's defending Pac-10 champ, sophomore Dan Trupin, broke the pool- and meet records with his national No. 1 1:45.69. That time is also fastet-ever in a dual-meet, breaking the old standard of 1:46.07 by Westcott from the Cal dual here a year ago.

Trupin's pr, Stanford and Pac-10 record is 1:43.83, swum at Belmont Plaza a year ago. Rogan returned the favor at NCAAs, winning in a pr 1:44.03 with Trupin runner-up (a "hot pursuit" 1:44.08).

Trupin's time here also bested the previous meet-record of 1:46.68 set by Rogan last year. Teammate Michael Bruce was second (1:48.74).

Stanford's Jayme Cramer followed with another pool record – this one in the 200 fly – winning in 1:45.58. The time eclipsed the previous best of 1:45.70 set by Stanford's Anthony Mosse in 1987, a year after he won the Commonwealth Games 200 fly. Cramer's seasonal-best is a 1:45.53 that ranks fifth

Westcott finished second (1:45.95) and sophomore Matt McDonald was third (1:48.47).

Stanford also swept the 100 free as Randall Bal won his second gold of the meet (44.89). Waters was second (45.16) followed by Zochowski (45.32). Marshall's 1:44.39 for the 200 back was (an NCAA "B" cut, and USC's Ous Mellouli broke the pool and meet records in the 500 free with his pr 4:20.32,

The old meet-record was a 4:20.91 held by Trojan Dan Jorgenson (1987).

Mellouli has a been a very pleasant surprise for the Trojans. The Tunisian Olympian and World Championship team member is second nationally in both IMs (prs 1:47.26-3:46.30) and his 500 clocking ranks him fifth. A computer-science major, Mellouli's the only African continent's non-South African male swimming in America and perhaps the only Tunisian swimmer ever to compete here.

(There are a couple of Zimbabwean and South African women competing collegiately along with a few South African men. Another southern African native, Wickus Nienaber, is a breaststtroker at Florida State and hails from Swaziland — an independent republic bordering South Africa..)

Vendt then won the 200 breast, followed by Bruce — defending Pac-10 100-200 champ — in 1:57.83. Senior Pat Fowler turned in the third-best time with his 2:00.62. The 400 free relay team of O'Bryan, Marshall, Scott Ransenberg and Waters posted the fastest time in this event, clocking in at 2:57.48 — sixth nationally and a Cardinal seasonal best.

In the men's one-meter diving event, Cardinal Adam Peterson took first place (317.26) followed by teammate Gavin Olmstead (291.30). On the three-meter event, Olmstead grabbed top honors (303.60) while Peterson finished third (286.65).

Stanford closes its conference dual-meet season on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 1 PM at Cal'ss Spieker Aquatics Complex in the male version of "The Big Splash."

The female version pitting the women's teams from Stanford and Cal goes off at noon next Saturday (Febraury 15) at Spieker.

USC would anormally swim UCLA in their annual "Battle of LA" but, as has been noted in this space previously, UCLA has no men's team.
