NCAA Div. I: In Historic Upset, East Carolina Women Nip NC State, 122-121; NCS Men Beat ECU, 133-109

GREENVILLE, N.C., Oct. 23. THE East Carolina swimming and diving teams officially kicked off the season today at Minges Aquatic Center, where the women made
history beating NC State 122-121, after 14 losses to the Wolfpack. ECU`s men fell to the Wolfpack, 133-109.

The Lady Pirates won eight out of the 13 events. Sophomore Diane Parker took first place in the 200 IM and the 200 fly, setting a new school record with 2:03.89 in the fly. The 400 medley team made up of Lauren Havard, Kelly Shinton, Katie Kochman, and Lindsay Holman took first place with 3:54.80.

Five freshman Lady Pirates took first place in their races: Adrienne Williams in the 50 free (24.51), Sarah Hunt in the 100 free (54.39), Holly Williams in the 200 back (2:05.36), and Courtney Kos (5:08.93) and
Meredith Lindgren in the 200 breast (2:19.69).

In the diving well, Carrie Wright set a new school record on the one meter board with 264.70 points, which also qualified her for nationals. Robbie Derr
also took first place for the men in the one-meter dive with a mark of 288.98.

The men had first-place finishes in six of the 13 events. Sophomore Casey Cronin earned two first-place finishes as he won the 200 IM (1:53.39) and the 100 free (46.46). Junior Dean Cheek took first place in the 1000 free (9:35.52), while junior Matt Walker won the 200 free (1:41.30) and sophomore Brad Bumgarner took first in the 200 fly (1:53.79).

"We made history today," Head Coach Rick Kobe said.
"It is the first time ever the girls have beaten NC State. We are extremely proud of both guys and girls; the guys only lost by 24 points. It is a great way to
start the season. We have Duke on Saturday and they are just as tough as NC State so we are opening with two really great teams."

The Pirates head to Duke on Saturday and return home November 1 to take on James Madison in Minges Aquatic Center at 3 p.m.
