NCAA Div. I: Air Force Sweeps Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Marylnd, October 7. IN an early-season battle of the academies, the Air Force men and women swept the Navy midshipmen. The men won their meet 167-133, and the women won 181.5-118.5. The meet was held in short course meters.

The meeting of the two service academy rivals was the first ever for the men. It was the third encounter between Air Force and Navy for the women's teams. Previously, the ladies dueled in 1990 and 1992 with the Falcons emerging victorious on both occasions.

For the Air Force women, senior Carly Baxter won the 200 meter freestyle with a 2:07.04 time, followed by Falcons Lauren White (2:10.47), Julienne White (2:10.50), and Colleen Smith (2:11.49). Air Force also won the 100m backstroke with newcomer Lindsey Kirchoff leading the way for the Falcons with a time of 1:09.27 with teammate Linsey Jansey finishing second with a time of 1:10.16.

Sophomore Carly Omizo finished second for Air Force in the 100m breaststroke with a 1:13.90 just ahead of senior Sara Crowell (1:15.88) and freshman Blair Leake (1:17.63). Baxter secured the top spot in the 50 freestyle for the Falcons with a 27.47 with junior Andrea Hyma taking second with a 28.01 time.

Diver Michelle Hager won the 1-meter diving event with a score of 244.87 over Navy's Sheila Singer (196.64). Hager also won the 3-meter diving event with a score of 250.72. Freshman Lauren Bursey took third with a 193.05.

The 200m freestyle relay team of Baxter, Kirchoff, Hyma, and junior Karen Long won the event with a time of 1:50.15.

On the men's side, junior Ryan Fitzgerald won the 800m freestyle for Air Force (8:37.67) with newcomer Chris Knaute finishing second at the 8:42.28 mark. Knaute also finished second in the 200 freestyle (1:54.66) and won the 400 freestyle with a time of 4:05.06.

Senior team captain Paul Brehm won the 100m backstroke (58.41) followed by junior Evan Parr (1:00.19). Sophomore Nick Burton took first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:08.24.

Seniors Eric Pounds and Rory Peterson finished first (2:07.02) and second (2:08.35) respectively in the 200 butterfly followed by teammate Mason Phelps (2:10.82). Brehm took first in the 200 backstroke (2:06.92) while Burton won the 200 breastroke event for the Falcons with a time of 2:27.53.

The Air Force men return to action the weekend of Oct. 24-25 at the Early Bird meet in Fort Collins, Colo. The women will the join the men Oct. 31 when both teams play host to the Univ. of North Dakota, Colorado School of Mines, Metro State College, and Colorado College in a coed meet.
