NC State Dominates Thursday Prelims at Men’s ACCs

ATLANTA – NC State claimed 16 total scoring spots in tonight’s finals at the ACC Men’s Championships.

500 free

A pair of freshmen led the way in the 500 free with NC State’s Anton Ipsen posting a 4:15.43 for first, while North Carolina’s Henry Campbell claimed second in 4:16.77.

200 IM

NC State’s Stephen Coetzer dropped nearly five seconds from his seed time with a 1:43.65 to top the 200-yard IM prelims.  Virginia Tech’s Brandon Fiala also cleared 1:44 with a second-place 1:43.73.

50 free

The N.C. State Wolfpack threw down a monster splash-and-dash preliminary with a 1-2-3-8 effort.

Simonas Bilis (19.13), David Williams (19.18), Ryan Held (19.27) and Andreas Schiellerup (19.72) grabbed four of the top eight spots in finals.

A swimoff will be required for the 24th spot with UNC’s Lucas Popp and NC State’s John Newell tied with 20.10s.  Newell beat Popp in the swimoff, 19.91 to 20.08.

Three-Meter Diving (Took place with women’s ACCs last weekend)

Miami’s Briadam Herrera won the event with 400.20 points.

Overall, Virginia Tech scored 247 points in diving last weekend, with North Carolina (194), Virginia (144), Florida State (121) and Miami (105) all breaking 100.

Pitt (89), Notre Dame (88), Georgia Tech (72), Louisville (20) and Boston College (6) also scored.
