NC State Claims Wins Over Campbell, East Carolina

RALEIGH, North Carolina, November 2. THE NC State swimming & diving team recorded a strong outing in its home opener, defeating Campbell and East Carolina by considerable margins. The meet was scored as a double dual-meet, with each team having a head-to-head score against both opponents.

On the women's side, the Wolfpack defeated East Carolina, 151-91, and overpowered Campbell, 190-45. State men's team routed East Carolina, 169-67. In the 26 events contested in both meets, the Pack took first place in 21.

“I think the team did well today,” head coach Braden Holloway said. “We had another good week of training and we keep focusing on the little things like technique and race strategy to make us better.”

State jumped out to an early lead in the first event as the two relay teams competing in the women's 400-medley, finished first and second. The men's team would follow suit with another sweep of the top two spots.

Freshman Kristin Connors' pace in the 1000 freestyle, could not be matched by anyone else in the event as she posted a time of 10:13.72, a full 10 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. John Newell, Brian Via and Brandon Kingston swept the 1000 freestyle, finishing first, second and third, respectively.

Hannah Freyman, a 2011-12 All-ACC performer, completed the 200-freestyle event with a first-place time of 1:50.37. Matt Thomas would do likewise in the men's event, clocking in at 1:40.59.

In the 50 freestyle, Riki Bonnema turned in a time of 23.81, while Jonathan Boffa timed in at 20.55, both of which were good for first place. The top-three finishers in the 200 individual medley were all Pack swimmers, as Christian McCurdy, Taylor Harris and Kohl Hurdle ended one, two and three.

The Wolfpack seemed to be satisfied with nothing less than first in every event and the crowd applauded its efforts throughout the meet. Former Wolfpack swimmer and Olympian, Cullen Jones, stopped by to watch the team compete.

“The crowd was awesome and the energy helped our team perform the way they did,” Holloway said. “There were a lot of people here and there was a lot of energy in the natatorium. It was great having Cullen come by to support us and we're proud to have him back.”

The 200 butterfly also yielded solid results for the Pack, with Julianna Prim turning in the top time on the women's side (2:01.91), while Austin Snyder recorded the best time for the men (1:52.37).

Sophomores Stephen Coetzer and Michael Camper occupied the top-two spots in the 200 backstroke, trailed closely by Harris. Freyman posted the fastest time for the women at 2:01.74. Junior Kelsey Liu finished first in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:21.17.

In diving, Rachael Mumma garnered the top-spot on the one-meter diving board with a score of 254.48, while Charles Retter recorded a 276.23 score, also good for first. Senior All-American Hannah Hopkins claimed first on the 3-meter board, turning in a score of 298.35. Fellow senior Hudson Rains posted the top score for the men (348.68).

NC State will not have much time to dwell on the win, as the Pack will travel to Durham, N.C., on Saturday for a meet against Duke and Miami. The meet will begin at 11 a.m. and live results are available by clicking HERE.

“The quick turn around will be a little tough, but it will simulate how it will be at the end of the year,” Holloway said. “We've got to get used to swimming late and swimming tired, waking up and doing it all over the next day.”
