COLLEGE PARK, Maryland, January 9. THE Navy men's swimming and diving team totaled 14 wins on the day to post a 160-129 victory over Maryland Saturday afternoon at the Eppley Recreation Natatorium in College Park.
"The team swam and dove really well today," said Navy men's swimming head coach Bill Roberts. "I was very satisfied with the overall performances we saw from the team this afternoon, starting with the first relay and continuing right through the final relay."
The Midshipmen (11-0) won the opening four events of the meet to quickly jump out to a 55-19 lead over the Terrapins (2-5). After the foursome of Mark Meyer (So., Bethesda, Md.), Andrew Utama (Sr., Walnut Creek, Calif.), Adam Meyer (Sr., Bethesda, Md.) and Aaron Aiken (Jr., Ocala, Fla.) won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:34.27, Erik Hunter (Jr., Placerville, Calif.) won the 1000 free by five seconds with a time of 9:20.25. Mac Anthony (So., Allentown, Pa.) and William Norton (So., Tyler, Texas) followed with first and second-place performances, respectively, in the 200 free before teammates Joseph Stark (Fr., Erie, Pa.) placed first and Ryan Ward (Jr., Prospect, Ky.) placed second in the 100 backstroke.
Navy's Pete Donahue (Jr., Washington, D.C.) would finish five-hundredth of a second in back of Maryland's Jeff Winters in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 58.82 to give the Terps their first win of the day, but the ensuing event saw Mids place first, second and third in the 200 butterfly. Adam Meyer won the race with a time of 1:49.51, Steve Dukleth (So., Glen Ellyn, Ill.) finished in second place with a clocking of 1:49.83 and Mark Meyer recorded a third-place showing with his time of 1:50.54.
The first half of the meet ended with Olaf Olson (Jr., Bainbridge Island, Wash.) winning the three-meter springboard diving event with a score of 336.57 and Aiken winning the 50 freestyle in a time of 21.11.
Aiken picked up his second individual event win of the day coming out of the intermission as he won the 100 freestyle in a time of 45.81. Maryland's Andrew Relihan then won the 200 backstroke by two seconds over Ward (1:53.85) before Mids finished in the top four spots in the 200 breaststroke. Stark won the race in a time of 2:07.90, Andrew Feeney (Fr., Norcross, Ga.) finished in second place (2:10.75), Donahue placed third (2:11.48) and Matthew Harmon (Jr., Cumberland, Md.) finished in fourth place (2:11.85).
The individual event portion of the meet saw Anthony win the 500 free (4:32.54), Adam Meyer win the 100 fly (49.98) and Mark Meyer win the 200 individual medley (1:53.38) races. Additionally, Olson won the one-meter springboard event with a score of 290.30.
The final event of the meet saw Navy teams place first and second in the 400 freestyle relay. Winning the race in a time of 1:25.27 with the team of Anthony, Adam Meyer, Alex Buck (Jr., Lisle, Ill.) and Aiken.
Navy's season will continue January 23 when the Mids face Yale in New Haven, Conn.
