National Records Tumble at Russian Championships

MOSCOW, Russia, February 10. A number of quality swims, including national-record showings, were produced at the recent Russian National Championships. Nikolay Skvortsov was one of the premier performers, as he swept the male butterfly events. Skvortsov set a Russian record in the 100 fly with a swim of 51.81, under the 51.95 of Igor Marchenko from 2003. Skvortsov also went 24.24 in the 50 fly and 1:57.11 in the 200 fly.

There were several national records on the female side, including an 8:28.81 clocking by Anastasia Ivanenko in the 800 freestyle. She also set a national record of 16:07.94 in the 1,500 free and cruised to a win in the 400 free with a time of 4:13.66. Another Anastasia, this one with the last name of Zueva, established a Russian record in the 50 back (28.94) and won the 100 back in 1:01.50. In the fly events, Russian standards were set by Natalia Sutyagina in the 100 (58.87) and Yana Martynova in the 200 (2:10.42).

Evgeny Lagunov had a dominant meet in freestyle action as he won the 50 (22.24), 100 (49.46) and 200 (1:49.54) distances, with Andrey Kapralov taking second in the 100 and 200. Meanwhile, Yuri Prilukov was the winner of the 400 free in 3:49.63, an obvious tuneup for next month's World Championships in Melbourne.

A medal contender in the backstroke events at the World Champs, Arkady Vyatchanin rolled to a sweep of the dorsal disciplines. Vyatchanin went 25.90 for the 50 and packaged respective efforts of 54.64 and 1:57.34 for the 100 and 200 distances. As for the breaststroke, Dmitri Komornikov won the 100 in 1:01.58 and Grigori Falko finished in 2:13.04 for first place in the 200 breast.
