Nathaniel Adams Among Winners at 2015 Alaska High School State Championships

The two-day 2015 ASAA State Championships finished today in Anchorage, Alaska with multiple athletes collecting more than one win.

On the men’s side it was Dimond High School who took home the win with a total of 104.5 points. Kodiak High School was second overall with a total of 81.5 points, while Soldotna High School collected 66 points for third.

Talon Lindquist of Kodiak finished ahead of the competition in the men’s 200 free with a 1:40.60, dropping 3.57 seconds from his prelims time of 1:44.17. Alex Suleimani of Lathrop grabbed second with a final time of 1:42.84, shaving 2.48 seconds from his prelims time. Third went to Will Pate of Sitka and his time of 1:44.24.

Jarod O’Brien of Dimond dashed ahead of the competition in the men’s 200 IM with a time of 1:54.55, improving upon his prelims time of 1:56.34 by 1.79 seconds. Second was Bergen Davis of Thunder Mountain with a 1:57.24, while third was grabbed by Joseph Anderson of Colony and his time of 1:59.68.

Nathaniel Adams of Service neared the state record in the men’s 50 free with his time of 21.02. The current record stands at a 20.91. Cody Watkins of Soldotna claimed second and was the only other athlete under the 22-second mark with a time of 21.67. Caleb Law of Service rounded out the top three with a time of 22.17.

Lindquist claimed his second win of the weekend in the men’s 100 fly turning in a final time of 50.05, nearing the state record of 49.19. Watkins settled for second and a time of 51.82, while third went to Jake Simmons of Colony and his time of 52.16.

Adams continued his sprint prowess by adding a win in the men’s 100 free with a time of 46.56. Reed Dittlinger of Dimond grabbed second place with a time of 47.69, while Ryan Emili of South Anchorage took third with a time of 48.24.

Dimond High School also collected the win on the women’s side with a total of 105 points. Second place went to Juneau Douglas High School and their 74 points, while Chugiat High School was a close third with 72 points.

Kodiak’s Marina Cummiskey finished ahead of the competition in the women’s 200 free with a time of 1:54.93. Dimond’s Erin Moody grabbed second place with a time of 1:56.14 and Sitka’s Skylar Moore turned in a close third with a 1:56.47.

Mia Ruffin of Juneau Douglas collected her first win of the day in the women’s 200 IM posting a final time of 2:09.23. Her second win came in the women’s 100 breaststroke as she battled Dimond’s Madeleine Oakley for first. Ruffin got her hand to the wall a slim .04 seconds ahead of Oakley to finish with a 1:06.60 over Oakley’s 1:06.64.

Emmie Jennings of Chugiak dashed ahead of the competition in the women’s 50 free, turning in a final time of 23.42. Jennings finished just shy of the state record of 23.20. Teammate Izzy Powers finished second overall with a time of 24.24, shaving .45 seconds off her prelims time of 24.69. Third went to Kierra O’Brien of Ketchikan and her 24.82.

Esther Min of Eagle River blasted the competition in the women’s 100 fly, turning in a final time of 57.70. Camille Dayton of Colony finished second overall with a final time of 59.27, while Elcee Evershed of Hutchinson was a close third with a time of 59.34.

Jennings continued her sprinting skills in the women’s 100 free, collecting the win with a final time of 51.01, putting her only .50 seconds off the state record of 50.51. Cummiskey grabbed second with a time of 53.57, and Sitka’s Jessica Davis took third with a 53.66.
