Natalie Coughlin Posts Strong Day at Georgia Invitational

ATHENS, Georgia, December 3. WITH the bulk of the nation's best either down the road in Atlanta for the USA Swimming Winter Nationals or in Texas for the Texas Invitational, California's Natalie Coughlin did what she often does – take the road less traveled.

Just a day after a media tour on behalf of her sponsor Speedo, Coughlin decided to compete during the second day of action at the Georgia Invitational. After clocking three strong prelim swims in the 100-yard fly (50.87), 100 breast (1:01.45) and 100 back (51.89) she returned with even more impressive efforts this evening.

First, she won the 100 back in 50.45, which stands as the third-fastest effort all time. She owns the American record with a 49.97 from back in 2002. She then clocked a 1:00.29 in the B final of the 100 breast to nearly move into the top 50 of the event. Coughlin closed down her evening with a sterling time of 50.39 to win the 100 fly. That performance is the fourth-fastest all time with her owning the American record with a 50.01 also from 2002.
