Swimming World Magazine is using the January 2014 issue to ring in a brand new year of swimming! 2014 marks the halfway point between the London 2012 Olympics and the Rio 2016 Olympics. It is a big year in more than one way: the long course season allows for the results of multiple selection meets to decide who will represent the United States on the National, Junior National and Open Water Teams. Qualifying meets include the Phillips 66 National Championships, World Championship, Pan Pacific Championships and World University Games.

Although there will undoubtedly be fresh faces hitting the National and International scenes, don’t count on the veterans to go down without a fight. One veteran that continues to impress is Natalie Coughlin. She made headlines after the London Olympics for her move to train with the California men’s head coach Dave Durden after training under California’s women’s head coach Terri McKeever for nearly 12 years.

Coughlin also transitioned out of her signature backstroke and IM events to focus her energy on sprint freestyle. AND — to top it all off — she is the cover personality for the January 2014 issue of Swimming World Magazine!

Here is a sneak peek at one of her photos from her recent Swimming World Magazine photo shoot at the 2013 Golden Goggle Awards in Los Angeles, California:
