Motivational Mondays Are Back! Miranda Biletski

CARLSBAD, California. March 27. WITH the excitement of the NCAA Championships over and hard work looking us right in the face for the next few months, I thought it was time to bring back Motivational Mondays. On this Monday, we will get to look at one of the most confident, courageous, and hardest working swimmers on the planet: Miranda Biletski.

Miranda has a very calm cool way about her, and a grin that tells you she is up to no good. But when it comes time to work she holds nothing back and is all business. Her workouts are continuous for three hours and the intensity is at a maximum the entire time. She works harder everyday than she did the day before in the hope of seeing more improvement. Miranda’s workouts are not in a pool, but on dry-land. She is not trying to break any records or make any teams. Miranda is simply trying to gain back function of her legs and all of her arms and torso.

On June 6th of 2005 Miranda was practicing starts with her club team in Canada. On one of the starts she hit the water wrong and struck the bottom of the pool with her head. She broke the C6-vertebrae that left her paralyzed from the sternum down. She has limited use of her arms and hands and it slowly gaining back control over her torso or as we say in swimming “core” and legs. Her range of movement and her strength improves everyday.

Miranda’s website says it all in one simple phrase, “Miranda will”. Her work ethic and cool devilish smile are a perfect example of confidence. So often confidence is confused with cockiness. Real confidence comes from character and hard work, like Miranda’s. Miranda won’t tell anyone she’s going to walk again with verbose statements or an arrogant swagger, she simply says it with her actions and that sparkle in her eye when she smiles.
