BUTTE, Montana, February 20. THE Montana High School State Championships were held Saturday, February 12 at the Butte Family YMCA.
Billings Central's Jenna Marsh set two State records to win the 50 and 100 free. She clocked 23.83 in the 50 and 51.45 in the 100. Billings West's Jordan Denny also set a State record, posting a 58.41 to win the 100 back. Denny also took first in the 200 IM (2:09.71).
Sentinel and Butte split the three relay wins. Sentinel's team of Miranda Tornatore, Aspen McHugh, Emilie Thane, and Kelsie Miller took both the 200 medley relay (1:54.03) and 200 free relay (1:43.11). Meanwhile, Butte's Abigail Wheeler, Adria Bentley, Airika Bentley, and Lew Yong Gerbrandt took the 400 free relay in 3:46.99. Gerbrandt also won the 200 free (1:56.33), while Wheeler finished first in the 100 fly (58.67).
CM Russell's Shelby Sechena won the 500 free (5:12.91), leading her team to victory with 185 points. Helena's Kaitlyn Kleppelid took the 100 breast (1:08.74), and Helena grabbed second (161), ahead of Sentinel (149).
Two swimmers from Big Sky/Loyola took two wins each. Kyle Jones won the 200 IM (2:02.33) and 100 breast (1:01.84), while Peter Szekely took the 50 (22.32) and 100 free (49.10). Patrick Martyak and Corban Elliott joined the duo on the 200 medley relay, which took first in 1:42.11.
Glacier's Jordan Loyda finished first in the 200 free in 1:51.10, and he led his team to victory in both freestyle relays. Josh Loyda, Aaron Murry, Logan Streit, and Jordan Loyda won the 200 in 1:32.42, a new state record, and the 400 in 3:24.94. Additionally, Bozeman's Brandon Smith took the 500 free (5:01.27), while Skyview's Chandler Crowe had no peer in winning the 100 back (53.11).
Helena's Hugh Kingery led his team to victory, winning the 100 fly in 55.44. Helena posted 219 points for first, ahead of Big Sky/Loyola (168) and Bozeman (151).
