NORMAL, Illinois, June 21. BACKSTROKE specialist Molly Gomberg will become a member of the Illinois State swimming and diving team for the 2007-08 season.

Gomberg, a native of Crystal Lake, Ill., took second place in the 100 backstroke and third place in the 100 butterfly at the 2006 Fox Valley Conference meet at Crystal Lake Central High School. She also earned fifth place in 100 backstroke at the 2006 sectional meet. Gomberg qualified for the YMCA state meet for swimming in the 200 free relay in 2006.

Gomberg has achieved many academic honors while coming from a unique background of academics. She was on the high honor roll in both her junior and senior year of high school. Gomberg is also one of the first student athletes to be both home schooled and attend high school classes. Gomberg will major in Spanish.

Head Coach Steve Paska believes Gomberg will be a positive addition to the team.

"Although Molly has not been swimming for that long, she has shown incredible talent," said Paska. "She will add depth to the team and will provide quality times in the 100 and 200 backstroke. There is potential for her to become a significant contributor to the team's success will be in a short period of time due to her ability."

Paska also believes that her academic success will help contribute to her swimming career.

"Molly is a gifted student," said Paksa. "Her credentials, work ethic and discipline are a positive addition and hopefully she will be able to transfer those qualities when she comes to Illinois State. I try to recruit young ladies that understand what it is to be a student athlete. She defines what it is to be a student athlete to the fullest."

Paska believes that adding Gomberg to the backstroke event will help the team as a whole

"There will be seven backstrokers with excellent times and having them all train together should produce great results," said Paska. "The girls will be able to train together throughout the season to make each other faster."
