MIT Swimming Hosts Batterman Relays

CAMBRIDGE – MIT swimming hosted the Charlie Batterman Relays at the Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center pool this weekend.

Competing for the first time this season, both the MIT men and women’s swimming and diving teams participated in the Charlie Batterman Relays in the Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center pool on Saturday afternoon against Bentley University and Wheaton College. MIT placed first in each of the men’s relays, while the women’s squad earned seven first place finishes.

MIT got off to a strong start in the men’s 200 yard medley with all three units finishing first, second and third. Senior Brendon Chiu (Monterey Park, Calif.), juniors Bo Mattix (La Canada, Calif.) and Thomas Norris (Cincinnati, Ohio), and sophomore Eric Dahlseng (Dassel, Minn.) led the Engineers’ first unit to a first place performance with a time of 1.34. 64. Tech also captured first place in the women’s 200 yard medley as junior Daniel Garside (Broomfield, Colo.), sophomore Veronika Jedryka (Arlington Heights, Ill.), and freshmen Jessica Chen (Rockville, Md.) and Amanda Wu (Cedar Park, Texas) collaborated for a time of 1.51.21.

Tech’s momentum continued as the afternoon progressed with both teams finishing first, second or third in their respective relays. One of their longer relays – the 3×500 yard relay – saw both the men and women’s teams finish first and second. Junior Michael Lu (Scarsdale, N.Y.), sophomore John Matthews (Yorktown, Va.) and freshman Scott Mayberry (The Woodlands, Texas) helped Tech’s first unit capture first place with a time of 14.35.93, while senior Georgia Van de Zande (Raleigh, N.C.), junior Katherine Yu (San Jose, Calif.) and freshman Mary Thielking (Fishers, Ind.) claimed first in the women’s relay with a time of 16.25.98.

Junior Grace Connors (Bronxville, N.Y.) and sophomore Harry Lubowe (Laguna Hills, Calif.) each capped the meet with first place performances in the one meter diving time trial. Connors earned a score of 220.00, while Lubowe finished with a score of 273.20.

The Wheaton College women’s swimming and diving team placed first overall in three events to highlight the Lyons’ efforts at the Charlie Batterman Relays, hosted by MIT, on Saturday afternoon at the Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center.

First-years Joanna Zak (Clifton, N.J./Montclair Kimberley Academy) and Charlotte Pitts (North Woodstock, N.H./Kimball Union Academy), sophomore Kelley Baylis (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) and junior Rebecca Idman (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) took top honors in the 200-back relay with a time of 1:55.91.

Pitts also teamed up with senior Cara Morris (Irvington, N.Y./Irvington), junior Courtney Leach (Gilford, N.H./Gilford) and first-year Jenna Hayden (South Berwick, Maine/Berwick Academy) in the 200-fly relay for a first place time in 1:49.93.

Wheaton’s final first place finish came in the 200-free relay as Hayden and Leach linked up with junior Kelsey Meyer (Malvern, Pa./Conestoga) and first-year Alexa Epstein (Amherst, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) for a time of 1:41.37.

In the 200-medley relay, Hayden, Morris and Leach teamed up with first-year Caroline Magnavita (South Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) for a second place finish in 1:53.90, while Baylis and Meyer junior Helen Grant (Suffield, Conn./Loomis Chaffee School) and first-year Emily Reynolds (Oradell, N.J./River Dell) produced a fourth place finish as members of the ‘B’ team in 1:58.98.

The Lyons went on to place second overall in the 400-medley 4×100 relay as Epstein, Pitts, Leach and Hayden combined for a time of 4:17.01.

Magnavita, Reynolds and Grant also joined junior Merrill McCluskey (Nantucket, Mass./Nantucket) for a third place finish in the 200-breast relay with a total time of 2:21.20.

In the 3×500-free relay, Idman, sophomore Claire Bollman (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Warde) and first-year Lucy Frey (Andover, Mass./Phillips Andover) registered a third place time in 17:22.00.

Senior Lauren Naruse (Wailuku, Hawaii/Seabury Hall), Bollman, Pitts and Idman turned in a fourth place performance in the 500-free relay with a time of 5:03.65, while Bollman, Naruse and Frey and junior Skyler Dean-Lee (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill) fashioned a fifth place showing in the 400-free relay with a time of 4:04.06.

Junior Sydney Gillis (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) rounded out the list of highlights with a fourth place finish on the one-meter diving board with a score of 194.50 points.

Wheaton returns to action on Saturday, November 1 when the Lyons travel to Worcester, Mass. for the New England Invitational, hosted by WPI.

The Bentley University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams made their season debut Saturday afternoon by competing in the Batterman Relays at MIT. The Falcon swimmers had one second-place finish and seven thirds during the non-scoring meet that also included MIT and Wheaton College.

The second was achieved in the women’s 200 yard breaststroke relay with senior Ali Koeber (Boulder, Colo./Lakeview HS) combining with sophomore Kaitlin McGahie (Boylston/Tahanto Reg. HS) and freshman Emily Niemiec (Meriden, Conn./Francis T. Maloney HS) for a time of 219.89.

The women also had a trio of thirds with McGahie and Niemiec each involved in two. They were both part of the 200 yard medley relay, swimming to a time of 1:57.90 with the quartet also including senior Danielle Hellstern (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug HS) and junior Melissa Clauss (Oakland, N.J./ Bergen County Academies).

In the 200 backstroke relay, Clauss, Niemiec, sophomore Laura Schlenker (Wheaton, Ill./ Wheaton Warrenville South HS) and junior Lindsey Goodwin (Staten Island, N.Y./Notre Dame Academy) were third in 2:00.69. Hellstern and McGahie teamed with senior Nadine Edwards (Danbury, Conn./Danbury HS) and freshman Jessica Chen (Darien, Conn./Darien HS) for a time of 3:49.96 in the 400 freestyle relay, also good for third.

Junior Sebastian Bury (Bellevue, Wash./Newport Senior HS) and sophomore Davis Wilson (Ransom Canyon, Texas/Lubbock HS) was part of three men’s relays that finished third, beginning with the 500 freestyle crescendo. In that one, they combined with senior Rene Faria (Caracas, Venezuela) and sophomore Liam Bartlett (Syracuse, N.Y./William Nottingham HS) for a 4:29.58.

Bury and Wilson were also part of third-place relays in the 200 and 400 freestyle. In the 200, Bentley finished in 1:29.62 with the relay participants the same as in the 500 free crescendo. The 400 included freshman Chris Vukas (Randolph, N.J./Randolph HS) and senior Luke Mason (Lowell/Lowell HS) with Bentley finishing in 3:24.49.

The other third was the 200 butterfly relay with sophomore Gregory Coleman (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North HS) anchoring. Preceding him in the pool were junior Alex Liulakis (Tenafly, N.J./Tenafly HS) and sophomores Colin McCarthy (Glastonbury, Conn./Northwest Catholic HS) and Jerrod Zimmer (Middletown, Conn./Middletown HS) with the Falcons posting a 1:41.10.

There was also diving action with Bentley’s top finishers senior Paige Wilde (Naugatuck, Conn./ Holy Cross HS) and junior Colton Bridge (Tolland, Conn./Tolland HS). Wilde was second in the women’s one-meter (219.60), Bridge was third in the men’s one-meter (203.80) and both were the only competitors from the three-meter board.
