Missy Franklin Doubles to Lead California Swimming to Victory Against Utah

SALT LAKE CITY – California women’s swimming won 11 of 16 events en route to a 186.5 to 109.5 victory against the Utah Utes.

Missy Franklin, who already ranks fifth in the NCAA with a 1:46.37 in the 200-yard free, cruised to victory in the event tonight against the Utes with a 1:48.92.  She led a Golden Bear 1-2-3 as Caroline Piehl (1:51.90) and Camille Cheng (1:53.04) also picked up points.

Franklin claimed a second title, this time with a 4:56.02 in the 500-yard free as she continues her freestyle-heavy collegiate schedule.  Cierra Runge placed second in 4:57.26 with Utah’s Madelynn Meisel taking third in 5:04.51.

Celina Li denied Franklin a triple with a 2:03.94 to 2:04.50 win against her in the 200-yard IM.  Caroline Piehl placed third for Cal with a 2:08.41.

Cierra Runge clinched the 1000-yard free for California with a 10:08.83 in the event, while Utah’s Madelynn Meisel touched second in 10:19.21.  Elizabeth Pelton, swimming an off event, placed third in the event with a 10:23.29.

Pelton recovered in the 200-yard back with a 2:00.94 for the win.  Utah’s Amanda Barrett placed second in 2:02.54 with Cal’s Kelly Naze touching third in 2:05.41.

Rachel Bootsma tracked down the women’s 100-yard back tonight in 55.27.  Utah’s Megan Kawaguchi finished second in 56.07 with Cal’s Melanie Klaren placing third in 56.52.

Cal’s Farida Osman touched out Utah’s Madeline Jamora, 23.74 to 23.75, for the women’s 50-yard freestyle crown.  Cal’s Kaylin Bing rounded out the top three in 23.88.

The other sprint free proved even closer than the 50 as Utah’s Giuliana Gigliotti and California’s Camille Cheng tied with 52.00s. Rachael Acker finished third in 52.26.

Noemie Thomas topped the 100-yard fly with a 54.83 in another California 1-2-3.  Bootsma (56.40) and Pelton (56.81) snagged second and third.

Stina Colleou delivered a win for the host team as the Ute put up a 1:03.71 in the 100-yard breast for the win.  California’s Marina Garcia Urzainqui took second in 1:04.45 with Utah’s Brianna Francis earning third in 1:05.85.

Colleou doubled up with a 2:17.97 in the 200-yard breaststroke, while Garcia Urzainqui (2:19.89) and Francis (2:20.58) duplicated the 100 breast podium.

Petra Soininen snagged another Utah win in the 200-yard fly with a 2:03.67, while Cal’s Celina Li (2:04.05) and Jasmine Mau (2:05.40) placed second and third.

In diving events, California’s Anne Kastler won the three-meter with 294.90 points.  Utah’s Amanda Casillas clinched the one-meter with 276.15 points.

In relay action, California’s Rachel Bootsma, Marina Garcia Urzainqui, Noemie Thomas and Rachael Acker grabbed the 200-yard medley relay in 1:43.54. Cal then closed the deal at the end of the meet as Elizabeth Pelton, Jasmine Mau, Rachel Bootsma and Camille Cheng took home the 400-yard free relay in 3:25.66. Utah made it a race in the 400 as Madeline Jamora, Dorien Butter, Rhianna Williams and Giulianna Gigliotti posted a 3:25.91 for second.
