Missouri Successfully Defends Show-Me Showdown Titles

COLUMBIA, Missouri, October 3. THE University of Missouri men’s and women’s swimming and diving team successfully defended their Show-Me Showdown titles tonight, topping the team standings at the annual all-Missouri meet in Columbia. Drury finished second and Missouri State third in both the women’s and men’s meet.

The Mizzou women’s swimming and diving team opened the 2014-15 season with a win in the ninth annual Show-Me Showdown Friday at the Mizzou Aquatic Center in Columbia, Mo. The Tigers took first with 696 points, Drury (429) placed second and Missouri State third (366).

Rounding out the team standings were Lindenwood in fourth (310), Saint Louis in fifth (260), Washington University in sixth (208), Truman State in seventh (199), William Jewell in eighth (44) and Maryville in ninth (24).

Missouri claimed 13 event wins during the meet, including double wins from freshman Rachel Hayden, sophomore Katharine Ross and junior Lauren Reedy.
The Tigers started the meet off with a win in the 200 medley relay. Mizzou’s A team of freshman Hannah Stevens, junior Abby Duncan, senior Danielle Barbiea and junior Anna Patterson took the victory with a time of 1:41.64, while Missouri B, C and D teams placed third, fourth and fifth, respectively.

Hayden claimed the first of her two event wins in the 200 free, as the freshman swam a 1:52.19 to lead a one-two-three Tiger sweep. Fellow freshman Erin Metzger-Seymour was second in 1:52.98, while sophomore Brittany Hammond took third in 1:54.33.

In the 100 free, Hayden added her second victory of the day after a swim of 51.23, narrowly ahead of Drury’s Wen Xu, who was second in 51.35.

Ross recorded wins in both the 200 IM and 100 breast to start her sophomore season with a bang. In the 200 IM, she touched the wall in 2:04.03, ahead of freshman Sharli Brady, who clocked a 2:05.80 for second. Ross’ second win of the day came in the 100 breast, where she swam an NCAA `B’ qualifying time of 1:01.74. Duncan placed second in 1:02.55 and junior Lauren Stoeckle took third in 1:04.68.

In the diving well, Reedy took first on 3-meter and helped the Tigers win the 1-meter scramble. The junior tallied a score of 280.50 on 3-meter for the win, while Missouri’s divers scored 348.65 points on 1-meter for the scramble victory.

Other individual winners during the meet were Barbiea, Patterson and Brady. Patterson nabbed a win of her own in the 50 free, where the junior touched the wall in 23.45 and Brady took first in the 500 free after a time of 5:01.94. Barbiea placed first in the 100 fly after touching in 55.15, ahead of Metzger-Seymour, who took second in 56.51.

In the 200 free relay, Missouri’s A team of Barbiea, Patterson, sophomore Victoria Trost and Ross finished in first after clocking a time of 1:35.98.
The Tigers closed out the swimming portion of the meet with a victory in the 400 free relay. Mizzou’s quartet of Stevens, Hayden, Metzger-Seymour and Brady, all freshmen, combined to swim a 3:28.24 to take the win.

Mizzou’s women’s squad returns to the pool on Friday, Oct. 24 against the Arkansas Razorbacks in Fayetteville, Ark.

The Mizzou men’s swimming and diving team claimed 10 event wins as the squad opened the 2014-15 season with a first-place showing in the ninth annual Show-Me Showdown Friday at the Mizzou Aquatic Center in Columbia, Mo. The Tigers took first with 684 points, Drury (436) placed second and Missouri State third (366.5).

Rounding out the team standings were Lindenwood in fourth (324.5), Saint Louis in fifth (244.5), Washington University in sixth (204.5), Missouri S&T in seventh (112), William Jewell in eighth (52), UMSL in ninth (49) and Truman State in 10th (39).

The Tigers won eight swimming events and swept the springboards in the diving well to propel the team to victory.

Junior diver Clark Thomas won the 3-meter competition with a tally of 318.90 points, followed by freshmen Hunter Fritter in second (307.35) and Eliot Cecil in third (287.50). In the 1-meter scramble, Thomas led Mizzou to the win with 380.80 points.

The Tigers started the meet off with a win in the 200 medley relay. Mizzou’s A team of seniors Sam Tierney and Igor Kozlovskij and sophomores Andrew Sansoucie and Michael Chadwick clocked a time of 1:29.95 for the victory, while Mizzou’s B squad of sophomores Carter Griffin and Eddie Mapel, senior Mack Darragh and junior Matthew Margritier were second in 1:30.75.

Senior Eegan Groome nabbed Mizzou’s first individual swimming win of the meet after a win in the 200 free. Groome touched in 1:40.46 for first, narrowly ahead of Chadwick, who was second in 1:40.65.

In the 50 free, Margritier claimed the first win of his Missouri career after placing first in 20.09. Margritier, who is eligible to compete for the Tigers after sitting out the 2013-14 season after transferring to Mizzou, notched an NCAA `B’ time in the event with his 20.09.

Sansoucie led a one-two Tiger finish in the 100 fly after her barely out touched Darragh for the win. Sansoucie touched the wall in 49.93 to Darragh’s 49.94.

The 100 free saw another one-two Mizzou finish by Chadwick and Margritier. Chadwick took the win in the event with a time of 44.62, while Margritier was second in 44.99.

Also an individual winner during the meet was junior Daniel Graviss, who took top honors in the 500 free after a swim of 4:33.90.

In the 200 free relay, Margritier, Chadwick, Tierney and sophomore Christian Aragona helped Mizzou’s A team breeze to victory in a time of 1:21.30.

The Tigers closed the meet with a dramatic come-from-behind win in the 400 free relay. The Tiger team of Kozlovskij, senior Alex Glogoza, Groome and senior Stephen Sobczak trailed Missouri State at the midway point but stormed back to win in a time of 3:05.42.

Mizzou’s men’s squad returns to the pool on Friday, Oct. 31 against the Missouri State Bears at the Mizzou Aquatic Center.
